Re: Front wheel bearing problem
David, I discovered today that the axle nut was loose. I torqued it to 140 ft lbs and the wheel wobble is gone, no noise and tighter feeling steering. The car has 178k on it and I bought it at 168k. I don't know if or when that wheel bearing may have been replaced. At this point I'm just going to ke...

Front wheel bearing problem
Is the junction the arrow points to the press fit connection between the bearing and the knuckle? If so I have a problem because mine is loose and wobbly.

Re: Headlight Aiming Question
That's some great info on generic headlight aiming, thenks. I'm also curious as to what the 2 remaining adjustment screws do. It appears that the outermost 8mm adjustment screw is for horizontal beam alignment but if so, what does the hex head screw in the horizontal alignment gauge do?

Re: Headlight Aiming Question
According to the owner's manual it is the "beam angle gauge (horizontal movement)". Adjusting the allen screw changes the gauge reading but I am not sure if this is for reflector angle adjustment or gauge calibration. My focus today was on vertical adjustment. If I learn more about the hor...

Re: Custom Legacy cat-back
2) To share my recently discovered knowledge that it's cheaper to have a custom exhaust system fabbed by a good shop than to buy replacement or aftermarket exhaust pieces and install them yourself. This will likely vary depending on the shop and replacement/aftermarket pieces. I've run across some ...

Re: Custom Legacy cat-back
Thanks! The muffler looks a little tilted in my crappy cell-phone photo but it's actually level and the tip is centered. I actually have a different muffler on it now but forgot to take any pics. It's basically the same size and shape but sounds better. When Greg originally did the work he suggested...

On 90-94 Legacys the top spring perch and top hat are separate components. On 96-98 OB and 98-02 Foresters the top spring perch is part of the top hat. I hope this helps.darkcrave wrote:Are t Upper Spring Perches the top hats on the struts? So if I put GC coil overs I would need my 91 SS top hats?

Custom Legacy cat-back
Just thought I'd share my new cat-back exhaust fabbed by Greg at Mandrel Bending Solutions in MD. This is nothing fancy but it sounds great and flows better than oem. Greg cut the oem 1.75" pipe just after the first cat and ran 2" 16ga aluminized pipe back to a turbo muffler and polished 3...

Re: 93 AWD Legacy SW to Forester strut swap advice needed
Thanks guys. I've been driving on this setup for a few months now and love it. The only negative I've found is that in really high cross winds the car gets pushed around more but that's just part of being lifted. It was really great in snow this winter. I did some off-roading in 8" of snow and ...

Re: Spark Plug Gap?
I want to like Seafoam because of all the great reviews but so far it hasn't done anything for me that Wally World Super-Tech FI cleaner didn't do. Speaking of which, I find it very annoying that I can't find any decent comparative reviews for popular carb/FI cleaners. They range in price from $2-10...

Re: Spark Plug Gap?
An italian tune-up is just going out and flogging the motor, driving agressively, that kind of stuff. Some people, including myself probably do this on a daily basis, while others never get above 4,000 rpm. Those are the cars you see with a little puff of black smoke when they get on the gas. Built...

Re: Re:
I'll give you my opinion on the colder plugs. It stems from the old hot rod days where they would run colder plugs to help keep the plugs from overheating on high horsepower/compression engines. Turbo cars are very similar, which is why some respond well to colder plugs. However there is a big diff...

Re: Torque bind advice needed
I finally got around to changing ATF. I simply drained 5qts and added 4qts of fresh ATF and 15oz of Trans-X additive. All previous torque bind symptoms are gone. Whether the improvement was due to the fresh ATF, Trans-X, the trans being slightly over-filled by the PO or a combination of these things...

Re: Re:
than why do they recommend a smaller gap and colder plugs with turbo cars? Because the presence of boost increases resistance across the gap so a smaller gap is easier for the spark to jump and the resulting higher combustion chamber temps require a colder plug to keep head and piston temps within ...

Re: Torque bind advice needed
It's now been several weeks since I added 4oz of GM LSD additive to my 4EAT and I have concluded that it made no discernible difference in the torque bind. Any improvement I noted before was due to trans temp which affects the amount of TB felt (less cold, more hot). Next up will be a ATF change. If...

Re: Correct tire pressure?
Gotta love tire monkeys. I once bought 4 new wheels and tires at Pep Boys. On their first attempt they managed to destroy all 4 wheels and 20 lug nuts with an impact wrench. On their second try they managed to install the new wheels and nuts without destroying them but installed 2 of the the tires w...

Re: Correct tire pressure?
^^^ Great answer! Just as an example of why not to use the max inflation pressure on the tire, I was recently contemplating a set of 195-75-14 BFG T/A KOs for my 3200lb Legacy wagon. The BFGs are rated at 65psi max at GVW of 6840lbs! I'm sure that 32-35psi would work much better for those tires on m...

I love making things or making them better with commonly available stuff. What a sense of satisfaction. Here is a link to pics of my modified oil catch can for my custom turbo Scion XB. Thanks! I appreciate all the great info I've received here. If not for this forum and USMB, I doubt I would or could have done this.
