Re: WRX ignition coils on EJ22T ECU
Decided to go ahead and change the injectors. Took a little over an hour, 90% of the time was spent trying to get the old ones out. New ones dropped in nicely and the car fired right up...thought did take a little bit of gas pedal. Checked for leaks and after not finding any took it for a quick spin...

Re: WRX ignition coils on EJ22T ECU
Success....and discovering teh fail. :/ First up the good - knock sensor wire shielding stripped back an inch and used a heat shrink connector to put it back together. Took a few minutes to monkey the new sensor into place, but a coat hanger and long screwdriver later, and it's all snugged up. Secon...

Re: WRX ignition coils on EJ22T ECU
Digging into the car now. 1) Pulled the element out of the MAF and one of the probes had a bit of gunk on it. Cleaned it off. 2) Pulled knock sensor out and the old one was cracked. 3) The wire going from knock sensor into the wiring harness is cracked right where the shielded wire starts...assuming...

Re: WRX ignition coils on EJ22T ECU
Oh derp....totally read what you said in regards to the injectors being swapped vs. the manifolds as you typed. Time for coffee!
With my swap I kept the EJ22T harness but extended some wires so it would fit with the DOHC intake manifold.

Re: WRX ignition coils on EJ22T ECU
Just a heads up...in case it matters....If your EJ22T injectors are in a SOHC intake manifold, it won't fit your DOHC heads....and the fuel rails are different between SOHC and DOHC. Thanks for the heads up - guess I won't try pulling on out to see if it'll fit...but I'm slightly confused. If you c...

Re: WRX ignition coils on EJ22T ECU
Long time no update. Been DD'ing the car for a while and ran into some engine bogging/bucking issues when trying to accelerate in the 2500rpm range. Did a seafoam treatment and that seemed to fix whatever was causing that issue (not sure I understand what it fixed....but it pulled smoother). But, th...

Re: WRX ignition coils on EJ22T ECU
Dave, How's your progress? I just turned the boost all the way down and have been driving it like that. Started up on the first try at 15 below in Steamboat Springs last weekend and its getting me back and forth from there and Denver without much trouble. Will probably dig into it further when it w...

Re: WRX ignition coils on EJ22T ECU
Swapped the 1 & 3 coils and no difference.
Pulled the plug on 1 and looked for cracks, none found.
Hrmmm. Only thing I can think of now is that maybe I've got a wonky injector on #1?

Re: WRX ignition coils on EJ22T ECU
I'd say you've got a crack in #1. Seems to be a common issue, from what I've read on NASIOC. Runs fine 'til WOT, then>>>misfire. Most likely the ECU goes 'limp' 'til you restart/reset it. Cool, thanks for the thoughts - just wanted some feedback before I start throwing parts at it. Weird thing was ...

Re: WRX ignition coils on EJ22T ECU
Got a chance to swap the coils on this weekend. I had tried it once before and must've messed something up (pretty sure it was which wire to tap into from the old coil pack because it specified the yellow wire, but I wasn't sure which side of the plug it wanted). Once assembled, it fired up right aw...

Re: WRX ignition coils on EJ22T ECU
Quick update on the mis-fire.
Pulled the MAF apart and there was gunk on the wire elements. Sprayed them down with brake cleaner and the car now pulls through the whole rev range fairly smooth! I will still try to knock out this coil swap and will report back when I get it done.

Re: WRX ignition coils on EJ22T ECU
Also what would you to to the ignitor on the firewall? I believe you can just take your two signal wires from the ecu and branch them out to the coils, then take all the other wires and cover them up, and remove the ignitor box. Dave The ecu goes directly to the ignitor box right? If so i could jus...

Re: Lifted 1994 Turbo Wagon
Correct on the rims and I'm 90% sure that's what tire size is on there...and I'm 100% sure I'm down to the wear bars. :) Funny story! A buddy of mine sold me a set of 15" legacy wheels back in March or so when I bought the car. This summer I started searching for cheap upgrades since I don't wa...

Re: Lifted 1994 Turbo Wagon
Rears don't have any negative camber that's for sure. Might be right at zero if I'm lucky. Its not a race car for me, so I don't care all that much...the lack of negative camber in the back might make it more tail happy, so I'm cool with that. :) Wheels and tires are just what came with the car. Abo...

Re: WRX ignition coils on EJ22T ECU
Correct, I should've had an extra zero in there. Though now that I think about it, I'm probably running 0.030 on the Evo, not down in the 20s. I do have an upgraded COP setup from SparkTech it, not the OEM ones anymore...but the OEM ones seem to be pretty stout as well. Only upgraded because I was g...

Re: Lifted 1994 Turbo Wagon
I may have some other pics in my phone still of spring length comparisons. The shocks I pulled off were shot, so I don't think I snapped any of the shocks, since the pistons on the old ones were sunken in. PM me your phone number and I can send them if you'd like. The three pics of before during and...

Re: WRX ignition coils on EJ22T ECU
Thanks for the info and wow, that's a huge gap for a turbo car! FWIW, I'm running ~6psi now (manual boost controller fully backed out, running on wastegate pressure) and I've got some bad something going on. The car feels like its breaking up and then bucks pretty bad around 3500rpm. I've recently r...

Re: WRX ignition coils on EJ22T ECU
Ok, I will rephrase my thoughts on the coil pack. In stock configuration they must not be that great if I have to re-gap my plugs to run less than 15 lbs of boost. I have already put in fresh plugs and the shop that installed them is familiar with EJ20 swaps and my issues, so I'm pretty sure I'm not...

Re: WRX ignition coils on EJ22T ECU
From what I gathered, the stock EJ22T coil packs are garbage and lots of folks were upgrading to the EJ20G coils especially when wanting to run more boost. However, the EJ20G coils were know to fail on a regular basis (plastic cracking with age), and now it seems folks with full EJ20G swaps were upd...

Re: WRX ignition coils on EJ22T ECU
From what I've heard on other forums, the rating used in Japan isn't the same rating used in the US, so its not as much of a difference as 98 to 93 (or 91) would actually indicate, but there is still a difference. FWIW, I've dug into some other areas of the car so this coil thing is on hold for at l...

Re: WRX ignition coils on EJ22T ECU
Damn, all this uncertainty has me thinking maybe I should just swap out the old stock fuel pump for this walbro I picked up and hold off on the coil pack thing for a bit. Maybe I should try and source an EJ20G ecu for one of the less aggressive ones...but will those work ok with the TD05 turbo, or a...

Re: WRX ignition coils on EJ22T ECU
I don't have a 20g ECU. I do have a full EG20G wiring harness, but I absolutely hate wiring work and merging harnesses. From what I was told, the EJ22T ECU can control the EJ20G motor with no issues...well, other than the factory EJ22T ignition not really being up to the task. FWIW, I've heard that ...

WRX ignition coils on EJ22T ECU
Hi all, I've searched and searched but not coming up with much on my specific question. I would like to upgrade to WRX ignition coils. I've seen writeups on how to convert an EJ20G ECU'd car to run WRX coils, and I've seen writeups on making EJ22T ECU'd car run EJ20G coils. Here's what I've got: - E...

Re: Lifted 1994 Turbo Wagon
Denver area...but the plan is that this'll be my commuter to Steamboat on the weekends in the winter. Still a few bugs to work out, but luckliy I've got a few months to get through the rest of the things.
