How did you order a RHD Legacy Postal when it was new?

Post by SubaruSVXCrazy »

I had a RHD Postal Wagpn and I always wanted to know people got them new. Did you have to prove that you worked for a post office or something? I asked a seasoned salesman and he said you couldnt order them at the dealership and they didnt have them on the dealer lots. He said you had to order it from through a subaru order form that a rural post office used to have. And a local dealer would deliver it to the customer. He really doesnt know much more and he's dead now lol. Was there any brochures or order forms? Im VERY interested to find more info on this. I seached google and can't find anything.

There is a website that sells everything you need for the rhd swap. It was for the postal swap like you're talking about. I have it bookmarked somewhere, i'll let ya know. They aren't cheap though, somewhere around 2k. I was thinking about doing it but figured it would be cheaper just to wait for a postal rig to come up for sale cuz i've seen a couple on craigslist in the past couple years. They only used the wagons for postal rigs too. So if you wanted a sedan rhd, your back to the kit.

I have seen a few in the JY's and always check them out to see how everything is laid out. It's amazing how many parts are different and I can't imagine trying to find/get parts. I also wonder if there are parts that someone out there might need. (different HVAC system, wire harness etc.)

I would think there would a a yahoo group or similar message board focused on Postal cars.

I also have a Postal with an AT. I bought mine used, and from the information I heard. They stopped selling the RHD models back in 1999. I am curious on how you got a 5spd postal, considering using a manual transmission is against postal regs. Nice find if I say so.

Judging by the number I've seen, I'm gonna go and say its actually unlikely that anyone here has first-hand experience with new ones.
I always figured it was a factory special-order that was offered exclusively to the post office. Considering all the safety red tape surrounding RHD, I seriously doubt they would have gone though the trouble of crash-testing it and certifying a new chassis just for the small numbers the post office used (which would be required for it to be available through the dealer's inventory I'm pretty sure).

I have one as well, bought from a guy who said he purchased it from a rural mail carrier. When I bought it there were still a bunch of USPS stickers on it and the right side was pretty trashed, likely from hugging the shoulder when delivering mail. Here it is the day I picked it up:

From what I have heard you can still purchase a brand new RHD Jeep Wrangler as a special order from Jeep dealerships.

Based on the wiring diagrams, they are essentially a JDM wagon with North American spec glass, bumpers, lighting, gauge cluster, and engine/ECU calibration - all bolt on items if you notice. The unknown variable is the seatbelts. Do postals have the autobelts? Do postals have a japanese VIN or an Indiana VIN?

I would *guess* based on the fact that these were never run by the USPS directly (they seem to be only used on privately owned rural routes) that the USPS had very little to do with their distribution. I'm making an educated guess that these were sold directly through Subaru and the few dealers in these types of areas likely knew how to get them. There may even have been a "go-to" dealer that specialized in them, but was still separate from the USPS.

My postal wagon does not have the automatic seatbelts, and as far as I know none of them did. I can check my VIN, how can I tell the difference?

I fabricated my own by cutting up and welding one off a 96 impreza brighton but now it has a hydrolic set from a JDM model purchased off a member from here
