5 Speed Manual into Auto RHD AWD Legacy

Post by Sublimejoe »

The title pretty much says it all. I am looking to do this swap and I'm not having much luck finding info. I have seen a few other threads but nothing that is quite right.

I am interested in what parts I will need to do this swap. Since the car is already down anyway, and the motor is coming out, I figured it might be the time to do this too.

Thank you everyone in advance for your help!

I'm not sure of the differences that might come from this being a RHD, but check the stickies before you hit the search box.
Here's a link to the drivetrain section stickies. Josh has compiled a full write-up on the swap from parts needed to pictures. Hope this helps.

I actually did see that thread, but after digging thru his page I don't see anywhere if the car was auto to begin with or not. I see he bought a pedal set from a turbo car, but it doesn't say whether that was because it was needed or if its an upgrade. He did mention that a lot of parts were upgraded.

I responded to your other thread: RHD and LHD pedal boxes are different. Turbo pedals aren't special, but you want to get some from a RHD car that came with a hydraulic clutch (eg. all turbos, and certain non-turbos).

OR, if you plan to stay N/A, you could potentially run a cable clutch tranny like all usdm ej18's and ej22 na's ran. But the likelyhood of someone importing an n/a RHD subaru front clip with a cable clutch-based pedalset are virtually nil, hence my suggesting the hydraulic set. The cable clutch and hydraulic clutch pedal sets are not interchangeable either.

So can I essentially get a rhd pedal box from basically any Subaru or are they different for each model & year?

There are differences between years, but 1st gen legacy and impreza fit for sure. That's what I've personally seen installed.

Awesome, just asked a friend in New Zealand to try and find me one. What other parts (if any) are RHD specific?

If I were to take a guess I would say that you could probably use a set of pedals from any 93-07 impreza or WRX (so long as they're from both a RHD car and they're for a wet clutch). I used a set of pedals from an 06 WRX when I did my auto to manual swap.

Not sure how that would mate up to the stock components, but if you're modifying things it may just be some additional modifications.

i did the swap as well surreal image's diagrams and wiring works on them as well and the first time i did it i cut and welded two pedal boxes together to make the pedal box work with the cable clutch and you have to make a hole in the firewall for the cable to make sure its not kinked but i later got a hydraulic set from a JDM model

Oh nice, and yours is rhd as well?

I purchased an ej22 and five speed tranny from a 1996 impreza. I'm pretty sure that's still a cable tranny right?

Yes its a RHD wagon as well i used an EJ25D from a 97 outback and the tranny from a 96 impreza brighton it should be a cable clutch tranny but it does have the bolts to install a clutch slave but it must be a push type clutch

Let us know when you get the pedals in! If you need help with the wiring let me know ill post pictures of mine. One of the most important is jumping the neutral safety switch.

Are you talking about pins 11 & 12 on the AT trans connector? The neutral safety switch really doesn't have much bearing on what the ECU does when it's configured for a MT.

So a guy on here is selling a pedal set from his 91 non-turbo Legacy. I know its not exactly what I would need, but is this something I can even work with?
