wrx 2002 in a 93ss

Post by Carbix »

im looking to be doing a 93 4eat swap to a 5mt wrx 2002...

what kind of problems will i be running into.

will i need to change my starter

is the wrx tranny a 3.9 where ther 93 is a 4.11 (whats the best way to go about this)

will i need to replace the front axels

and just some over all insite to this would be great

i have read the vary good and long walk through on how to do this. im just trying to find info in the way of how the wrx 2002 tranny will effect this, if at all

The WRX transmission needs a 3.54:1 rear gear. Your correct in that the WRX runs 3.9:1, but the transfer case has a 1.1:1 reduction ratio.

So you're gonna need the WRX RE and DL, make sure you got 'em.

Axles should be OK as long as yours are in good condition, but if you can cut a deal for better CVs, do it. I recommend the FWD ones, as they're beefier, and I hear some of the the oem replacements are being made differently so as to last longer and handle more power.

You will most likely need WRX shift linkage...or any of the other compatible units.

I think "RE" means Rear-end and "DL" means driveline...

If you intend to keep the 1.1:1 center diff, then you will need a 3.545 rear diff...which is either a 5mt WRX or SVX unit. Your factory driveline will work fine.

A hydraulic pedal assembly out of most any Legacy, Impreza or Forester will work.

Just an FYI, your 93 SS has a 3.9 final drive ratio. It doesn't matter though as it's been mentioned the WRX has a rear 1.1:1 transfer gear.

He's got an AT, it's a different driveline then the MT driveline. He'll need the MT driveline from either the WRX or legacy.

I hate to say it, but if you're tryin to do this as cheaply as possible, rather then doing it correctly, you should maybe be asking yourself whether you should be doing the swap in the first place.

Yeah, don't run out of money part way through. You'll probably forget to buy a lot of little random parts, which can add up fast.

Excellent point...can't believe I overlooked that.

I think he will need a Leggy one...when I did the 5mt swap into a Touring Wagon, I used the original rear section, and then got a front section from a 92 5mt wagon.
