AWD Swap Update: Complete!!!

Post by SubyFusion »

I just realized when I do my AWD swap that I am going to have to buy new struts for the rear!!! I just bought new struts :( anyways I have KYB Gr-2 struts right now, and I was thinking it would be cool to get some KYB AGX struts for the rear, how do these work with the stock springs? and how is the car going to handle with the Gr-2's still on the front? The doner car came with forester suspension but its just to high for my taste!

Re: Stupid AWD!!

Post by Legacy777 »

I had GR2's on the car before I did the AWD swap and upgraded to the AGX's. Honestly, the GR2's are fine. I found the AGX's even on the middle setting were a little stiffer with the whiteline springs. However the 92-94 KYB struts have slightly higher damping than the 90-91's.

It's up to you whether you want to upgrade or not, however I would recommend against putting different struts on the front and rear. I've done it and can play hell with the handling. The rear was way too tail happy, not a fun thing when pushing the car around corners.

Also not the fastest way around if it's much more than neutral and in changing conditions can lead to unpredictability. Power over steering which can be controlled is OK, but too much passive oversteer makes a lousy getaway car (or race car, if that's your concern).

Re: AWD Swap Parts List?

Post by SubyFusion »

Ok so this is what I have on my list so far, please feel free to add anything I am missing! I want to be ready to do this so I don't have to keep my baby down very long!

So far I have:

AWD Swap Parts Needed

Clutch kit (push type)

Flywheel

Rear AWD struts (kyb Gr-2)

Transmission Cross Member Bushings (whiteline or superpro)

Differential Bushings? (Yes/No)

If I am missing anything at all let me know

Thanks, Brian

Okay so I have everything now but the flywheel, which will be A 2.5Rs flywheel to go with the Exedy clutch. This is going to be fun! will the front axles on my legacy work on the 2.5rs trans?

Do the cable clutch transmissions even have the pivot pin area machined for hydro clutch setup??

Are you talking about the clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder? The slave cylinder should be mounted to the transmission.

Is there already a hole in the firewall for the clutch MC? If not, you'll need to cut one out. You can use the template I made and have on my AWD & 5spd swap write-up to get the alignment correct.

The pedal box is what has the studs mounted to it that the MC attaches to.

No, you need a hydraulic clutch & brake pedal assembly.

I also was looking at the rear sway bar and it has the metal drop links instead of the c-shaped end-links, I thought the 92 turbo legacy's came with the c-shaped end-links? I'm confused can someone help me with this? Am I going to be able to use the rear suspension on my 92 legacy?

I think 92 was the switchover year, so you may have gotten an early model with the drop links. You can use those links & arms if you want, as long as their from an AWD car. If you want, you can upgrade to the newer lateral links with the mounts for the c-shaped end links. They're the same link as on the non-turbo, and should be easy to find.
