ej25d?

Post by muffin77 »

From my research I am pretty sure all 2.5dohc phase one motors are 25d's... is this correct? only other dohc 2.5s are turbocharged motors(sti and forester)... and what is the best way to tell if it is phase one? for instance a friend has a bunch of subaru motors. How will i tell if the motor i want to buy from him is a 25d

If it's N/A, DOHC, and 2.5, and from a US/canadian car it's a phase 1. I mentioned that there are some "Phase II" ej25d's in another thread, but that engine has phase I heads and runs on phase I electronics. Subaru was apparently trying to use up their supply of 25D heads and slapped them on phase II blocks.

Another way:

If it's a DOHC and the intake manifold mounting bolts are all in a line then it's phase 1. If its a DOHC and the mounting bolts are staggered it's phase 2.

Use the 96-97 25D heads over the 2.5rs sohc heads. I believe the early 96's are the same as well.

Benefits are the simplicity of the swap and the flow of the ej25D heads over the stockers. However I have no static proof that they flow better than the sohc heads on the RS

Let me know if you need more info, I'm currently building one myself.

Cole.

The SOHC heads on the 2000+ cars ('99 for the 2.5RS) flow better than the earlier DOHC heads. However, the DOHC head are more compatable with our electronics.

'96 Legacy/Outback EJ25D heads are HLAs (like the early EJ20G) while '97-'99 heads are shim-over-bucket (like the EJ20K)

-All this is true. If you have a little ambition you can make anything work.

The thread above that I pasted is a fantastic source for information. I will be posting up pics later of my build to show the route I went.
