Was draining tranny and "found something"

Post by bignose »

Was draining 5MT tranny at lunch.. when i took out the magnetic drain plug there was a chunk of metal stuck to it about the size of a thumbnail clipping.

I've never driven this car, bought it for parts.. does this sound like the kind of problem that could preclude me from using this tranny for a swap ?

thanks.

Might be, might still work fine, won't know until you put it in and try it.

It is not all that uncommon to find something on the drain plugs, that is what they are there for. Sounds like a bigger shaving in your case. What you don't want to see are fractured metal surfaces (tooth fragments usually). I would think that the metal you found would be no big deal. It might be worth checking again after letting the new oil slosh around a little bit, to see if there is anything else showing up.

That's not a trivial piece of metal. Let me put it this way: if it were to go in our rally car, we'd strip it after seeing the metal. If it were in my street car I'd drive it until it failed or miraculously didn't. If it were for a transplant into a street car I'd split it open since it's out anyway.

i think the approach i'm going to take is to slap it into my car anyways, if it breaks it breaks, at least most of the conversion work will be done, and putting a new 5mt tranny int its place will be less work. that and ill want some sort of snazzy gears some day so this will just be a better excuse to wrestle the funding out of the wife ;)
