Ball bearings in the timing belt cover???

Post by georryan »

So I'm working on changing my headgasket, and so i was pulling my crankpully and the black plastic covers of the timing belt. I broke half the bolts mounts that were glued in the covers unfortunately as well.

When I pulled the front timing cover off I had a bunch of ball bearkings fall out. Where did they come from??? Should this worry me? What has ball bearings inside that timing belt cover area????

My first inclination is that this is a bad thing.

Could you see if any of the seals were missing from around any cams or cranks?

The only things I can think of are the timing belt pulleys. Should be pretty easy to find the affected on once the timing belt is off.

I'm thinking the small toothed and smooth ones that direct the timing belt... Or the tensioner.

But the water pump doesn't, the oil pump doesn't, the cams don't.

Only other thing I can think of is that its someone's idea of a joke, and they just shoved a bunch into the bottom of the timing cover...

I am pretty sure it is one of your idler pullies. Let me know if you need a good used one. They are like $75 new, and I have a whole stack of good used ones on the shelf...

yes the tensioner has ball bearings in it. You were probably very soon to jam the pulley and break the belt

I would not re-use one no matter how good it seems. many have failed taking down the timing belt. They aren't cheap but if you are changing the belt (which you should do now, regardless of how it looks), it makes sense to buy new

Well I sourced some timing belt covers and I went ahead and bit the bullet for ordering the belt tensioners. I also ordered a new water pump in the name of principle. So I should be set. Thanks the the offers of help guys. I ended up getting the tensioners for about 40 bucks a piece.

Tonight, the head comes off and the gasket gets replaced, and tomarrow, hopefully, the new turbo and intercooler start to go in.

Don't reuse the idler pullies/gears if they're missing ball bearings.......Or this might happen ;)

Ya know what Josh? I'm just not all that convinced that the belt damage in those pictures were not caused by angry monkeys.

Everyone knows that most destroyed belts, have nothing to do with ball bearings at all. It has everything to do with monkeys. Angry ones. In small groups.

I suggest that when using belts. Dont use them around monkeys. Even if there not angry, it doesn't take much to excite them. My cousin once denied a monkey the last bite of some Cherry Garcia in high school. Ever since then hes had to poop in a bag.

Just imagine if he was a belt.

Imagine.........

Such a messed up world.

all in good fun amigo :-D
