Raquel is dead

Post by Splinter »

Serious this time.

The crank pulley got loose and smashed itself to bits, and the crank bolt is broken off inside the crank shaft.

The car was IDLING when this happened.

Any advice on what to do?

start praying that you didnt bork the block and get parts for 2.35L?
get a cheap ej22e for the crank?
or, can you tell how loose the crank bolt was when stuff started to happen? if the keyway is not totally chewed and you dont think that the crank bolt was fully tight you could try an EZ out. would be a pretty damn scary/difficult procedure to do though. maybe the rad and AC condenser would have to be pulled, or get one of the snubnose drills. good excuse to get more tools eh?

My condolences go out to you Splinter.

Subaru did a great job with their engines, except that damn crank pulley...

What kind of condition is the end of the crankshaft in? I pressume it's a bit rough but is there enought to shim and mount a new pulley on after exracting the old bolt?

that fucking blows steve!!!!!!!!!

i think its time for a stroker motor :D

chances are that even if you get the rest of the bolt out its chewed up the keyway to much for it to be any use... that means ripping the motor out and replacing the crank. i do know a place to get a brand spanken new OEM 2.2t crank for $100+shipping (i got one for my new motor)

This is the second person I have heard of the crank bolt snapping. Is the crank warped or what is it that does this? Should I be worried about mine?

I have taken mine off to replace the timing belt and impacted her back on.

What special precautions should a person take with that?

Torque the hell out of the bolt.

120ft-lbs minimum

Check it every time you're doing anything with the engine.

Same thing happened to mine. i talked to a subaru mechanic i know and he said it happens all the time. All they do is give the people the option of replacing the crank, or JB welding the crap out it.

The torque spec is wrong. 110-120 is what you want. It's like the bullshit 65 spec for the lug nuts. Great if you want them coming off in a corner.
