EJ22 N/A Tuning. What to do?

Post by Scandinavianflick »

The thing is I have a N/A EJ22 (European) engine and I was thinking about adding a turbo but I know it's not that easy. What parts exactly would I have to replace and is it stupid to try? Is it cheaper to buy a complete EJ20H?

hey there im new here to BBS but i still know a lil sumthin, i currantly have an ej22 n/a as well i plan on getting a ej20t i the future only because i cant find an ej22t the motor that u and i currantly have in our cars is a bit different than the ej22t's the turbo 2.2's have a fully closed deck with a set of lower compresson pistons so it can handle the boost better so the first problem your gonna run into is going to be with the block of the motor and the second is thew pistons youll have to get a 8.5-9.0 to 1 pistins and put a double head gasket on it because of the non closed deck then all you need is a turbo header for basically any subie and a turbo but be weary keep the boost low youll also need some sort of fuel management to retune for the turbo motor in my opinion its best to get a 2ltr turbo and a megasquirt 2 plug and play standalone ecu that will wrk just fine the3 motor should cost about 700 or 800 and the ecu will run u about 400

Double head gasket?

Also, most importantly, if you want to run with the subaru factory style turbo setup, you will a turbo crossmember. It has the notch in it for the subaru uppipe.

Overall, it's a huge swap, although it's worth it. and make sure you get a full turbo exhaust.

Thanks you guys.

The problem is that a WRX motor or an STi motor are pretty hard to find here in Iceland and when you find one it's gonna be bloody expensive (3000$ at least).

And of course if I use online stores like ebay it will be really expensive due to the tolls and taxes and what not. All in all I just want to get a turbo and everything I need for the swap, but is the open deck block too weak to be packing any power? I'm not talking about much here, just like ca. 200 whp.

Thanks again for your answers. :)

Yeah of course.

So I would be able to get something like that from my engine right? With all the right parts of course.

You most certainly do not want to put on a "double" headgasket.

ok if your trying to make a non turbo 2.2 into a 2.2t its a bad isea in the first place and you only have 6 months to live.

its cheap, its EASY, and it makes alot of power but it will explode because its completly open deck, obviously your trying to do things the right way try and get a JDM 2.0t from the jdm warehouse and make your own notch in the crossmember youl be all set.

You can make a non turbo a turbo, but expect some issues with longevity. Douglas Vincent has been running non-turbo blocks as turbo motors for some time. I'd say he has pushed the limits of those motors to about 400 hp. So if done right they can be made to produce good power.

The catch is, it's usually cheaper and easier to find a motor that is already a turbo motor with the matching ECU.
