I just acquired an early head unit with the aux port and was using my cassette adapter until I purchased a cable. All of a sudden the unit started changing sides for no apparent reason. The adapter turns freely and will fast forward/rewind with no bind ups.
Has anybody actually tried to revive one of these things? For various reasons I would like to keep the stock unit.

Have you tried to see if a regular cassette tape works (assuming you have one)? This would confirm whether the issue is with the head unit or cassette adapter.
Typically the cassette players will change side automatically if they reach the end of the tape. I think the head unit looks for resistance in the tape to switch sides. If the cassette adapter spins freely then it may be a mechanism in the head unit. Without pulling it out and taking it apart it'd be hard to diagnose. You might be able to rig something to disable that feature, but you'd have to take apart the head unit.
If you have a local electronics shop, they may be able to look at it, but not sure what it would cost you.
