So, my friend and I finally put my old Legacy back together the other day and I had to leave before it was ready to be fired up. He said there's rust in the fuel tank. It's sat for a few years at this point. Anyone know if the tank is metal or plastic?

If it's plastic what's the best way to clean it?

If it's metal where the best place to get a replacement?

The tank is metal.

As for a replacement, you could try a junk yard.

Were they all metal or was their any years they used plastic?
I forgot to mention this was on a '94 Legacy. They're kind of
hard to find at the junk yard around here. Is there anywhere that
still sells them new?

All the first gen ones are metal. You can look into what motorcyclists do to remove and rustproof their tanks, cause it's an ongoing issue for them.

I've noticed they use either muriatic acid or vinegar and then
line it with Por-15, but I don't know how I'd be able to re-coat
the inside of a funky shaped fuel tank like we have.

Right now we have the vehicle running again off of a 5-gallon
bucket connected to a fuel pump and some hoses running as
feed, return and vent lines. It works, but I called 31 junk yards
yesterday and only one of them had a Legacy and couldn't tell
me if it had the fuel tank and it's less than close.

Is the AWD and FWD fuel tank the same?

What is the procedure for dropping the tank? What all
has to come off?

AWD and FWD are shaped different to accommodate the driveshaft.

Having worked at a junkyard I'll tell you it's standard procedure to puncture the tank to drain the fuel. I'd ask that place if that's what they do when they process their cars.

I'm pretty sure the rear subframe has to come out along with the driveline, rear diff, heat shields, and maybe the brakes/suspension to be able to drop the tank.

Have you tried the national junkyard networks such as car-part.com or autowrecking.com ? I've used the last one for various parts including a windshield

I figured it may be, but it seems like a lot of extra work for
for Subaru to design two different tanks. Never seen the FWD
tank though. And yeah, I've seen them do it a lot. Some actually
try and drain and resell the tank though...them's my peeps.


Well...that's a lot of crap to remove. It's been raining so much
here lately too. Kind of a bummer. Thanks for the info!


Yeah, I tried car-part.com. Never heard of autowrecking. I'll check
that one out. The one place that was 27 miles said they had one, but
I called the next day and the woman said it was gone.

Is your car fwd? I just swapped mine and the tank might still be at the shop. Its quebec.

It's all wheel drive. I would've assumed the AWD
ones would be a lot easier to find
