XT6?? ugh I haven't seen one anywhere in years! They do pop up rarely so I'll keep you in mind. Had an 87 XT myself, 1.8 turbo, loved that car!

And I have seen tan manual belts before ...

not sure what will fix it, but it happens with my '91 N/A wagon as well.

I _DO_ know, however, that if you don't put the pump handle all the way into the filler neck it won't do this, so I suspect that you are right about the fumes escaping.

maybe adding a better vent on the fuel tank would help?
