Mostly for posterity.. In the middle picture, the round hole with the square peg, inside the clamp area that goes around the column. The "square peg" is the actual lock. It has a corresponding "hole" in the steel shaft of the steering column. Yeah, that's it. You'd need to remov...

Set a radio preset. Turn off the car, and turn it back on a few minutes later. Does the preset still work? Yeah. I didn't change the way the factory radio is wired, just added a CD changer to it. So in response to your question, I'm thinking you probably swapped them. Only because there should alwa...

Factory CD changer question

I have a '94 Legacy Sunsport Wagon which has the factory 80W AM/FM Cassette stereo. I bought the factory Subaru subwoofer and the CD changer for a newer ('98-'02 I think) Subaru on eBay for $70 each. Both were brand new and are installed and working. The CD changer's audio cable just plugged straigh...

Glad you got the joke. "Accessible" is probably the important word. I suspect not, without removing the ignition lock. Well, I've never taken a Japanese steering column apart, only GM and Porsche (from VW's corporate parts bin), but there's usually a spring-loaded pin or a block that pops ...

That was a joke. You grind the steering lock out of existence. I probably should have added a smiley after that comment.

Do you know of an electromechanical way to defeat the steering lock? How about an angle grinder? It's electromechanical, and it will defeat the steering lock. One point, the factory key-operated ignition switch gives you an important safety feature that a simple start button doesn't... if you take ...

I don't think oil normally "flows" inside the transmission at all. It just sits at the bottom and gears move through it. I've run a NP435 pickup truck transmission with the shift tower open, and I can tell you that even at idle in neutral, that oil is being thrown around by the gears. The...

Heh, I suppose I could have a push-button starter if I just epoxied my remote starter key fob to the dash. Funny you should say that... the remote starter I installed in my car has an input that you can ground with a relay or just a button that does the same thing as if I pushed the start button on...

I'd be interested to see the 6 speed cooler setup, if there is one. The gear oil does cool the gears, but how much extra cooling is necessary? On most cars, probably none. I agree that a cooler will only really make a difference if you drive your car very hard for long periods of time. If you are ov...
