Post by dzx »

I've got one with 3 you can pick up when you get the mounts. Or just cap the 4th hole...

yeh its got two regular holes then where the third one is a disc with two lines coming out of it. I guess all the subaru's at the junkyard had these ones with the 4 holes.

Can you get new canisters from the JY?
dzx, did your car make a sort of 'knocking' noise that resonated into the interior, like perhaps a phone or a pager was vibrating rather harshly inside your glovebox? I was told that sound (which is going on in my car) was from the EGR, which, if I assume correctly is associated with the charcoal canister, right?
Any Ideas?

So is it ok running without it? Are there any side effects on the pcv system? Up here in Minnesota they don't check on stuff like that. If it made IC pluming easier I think I could live without it.

I was just going to move the cannister but since it was broken i just left it off and let the lines dangle. I didn't notice any change but there could have been.

umm... isn't it kinda important to have the charcoal canister to process the gas fumes from the tank? This has something to do also with, when filling your gas tank, why you should NOT top it off after the auto-shut off (splash detector) has stopped your pump.

Something 'bout loud 'splosions. Go boom. I'll ask my friend, he seems to know something about it as he's the one that warned me. But I think thats a good piece to have functioning properly in our type of fuel system...

Yes it is in the way for FMIC piping, but not if you lengthen the hoses and move it to the other side, which is what we had to do.

No, its for evaporative emissions. the charcoal absorbs the fuel vapor from the tank then when the ecu tells it to opens a valve and burns the vapors in the engine. It's supposed to ever so slightly increase the efficiency and decrease air pollution.

It really doesnt have any noticeable side effects, it doesnt make your car smell bad or decrease your gas mileage. It is illegal to remove but how many of us are running catless exhausts too?

EJ22 and EJ22Ts use different charcoal canisters. The non-turbos only have two fittings on top and the turbos have three. That's because the turbos have an auxiliary purge system that operates when on boost.

You can use a non-turbo canister if you remove the auxiliary purge valve and cap off the other fitting(s). To be safe, it's probably best to also put a check valve in the purge hose. That's what I did.

Doesn't it already have a check valve on the line that goes from the resonator to the canister?

That's the auxiliary purge valve. Non-turbo canisters won't have a fitting for it.
