quick question... can anyone with an early 90s legacy tell me what the filter is that is right below and to the left of the battery? it looks like it screws on and filters stuff out of the radiator..... does this need changed and if so, where do i get one? looked on newer legacy's and can't find it anywhere.... hayne's manual doesn't show it either.... i took some pics of it but forgot them on my mom's computer..... some input would be greatly appreciated.

It is an add-on tranny filter. It was an add-on kit for the first couple years of the first gen legacies (90-91) due to autos creating an excess amount of metal shavings. The kit is like 20 bucks....really cheap. It's cheaper to buy the kit, then try and buy the filter separately.
The transmissions were revised in later years to not need the filter.
Dealer said no need to replace the filter, however I bought another one and replaced it around 140,000 miles.
