cracked the oil pan and trashed the engine, HELP!

Post by greg donovan »

Edit:

several things going on.

slow oil leak that i didnt monitor good enough and a bad timing belt with failing bearings in the tensioner and idler pulleys.

car should be fixable and the engine is not trashed.

no oil in my engine and it made an awefull screeching sound in sync with the rpms.

car died and oil light came on.

i added a qt of oil and it turned over but wont stay running.

pretty sure the bearings are shot and probably a piston and the turbo too.

the car is my 94 sport sedan.

what are my options to get this back on the road fast? dont care if it is turbo or not right now. just need it able to move under its own power. hopefully the ej22t is fixable. that can be my new winter project.

i think i have a line on a WRX longblock.

i also have access to a couple EJ22s.

if i use my heads (assuming they arent trashed) on the ej20 or the ej22 it shold be a simple swap, correct?

thanks.

found a line on a trashed 91 turbo with a good driveline that probably needs headgaskets. probably use that shortblock to get back on the road the fastest with the turbo.

in the mean time a friend is selling me a old pre 97 impreza wagon with a 1.8 and awd w/a 4EAT for cheap.

who knows maybe it is time for sme swappage into a impreza?

If the oil light only came on after the motor stopped then the sound was probably the turbo going. Turbos make a squealing noise. They only need to get air bubbles in the supply to wreck them. The bottom end is a good bit more robust. Bottom end bearings don't generaly make a squealing noise.

I've fitted new turbos to cars before after similar scenerios and they have been fine.

You'd need to clean all the pipeing and the intercoler in case there were bits of turbo in there.

Unfortunatly you'd have to fix the sump too even test the motor, then, if in fact the turbo did have too much play, plug the turbo's oil pipe(so the stuffed turbo doesn't spew oil down the exhaust pipe making smoke), and fire it up with an oil pressure gauge attached to it.

If the pressure is good, and there are no bad noises, you might only need a turbo.

well it turns out that the car is not leaking oil that bad. i have a few different things going on.

it appears that the car has the original t-belt on it. or at least a very worn out one. as it sheared teeth. the screeching was probably the a idler pulley. all the noise when it tries to turn over is in the front of the engine so it might be ok.

will know more tomorrow.
