EJ22 Rebuild Problems - Codes 33,42

Post by 07Evolved »

So, I have a 94 Legacy FWD AT that had blown head gaskets on it that I decided to buy to fix or use for parts. I decided to go ahead and replace the head gaskets so I could flip it and make some money.

I finally put everything back together yesterday. I made sure to clean the surfaces of the heads and shortblock before installing the new gaskets, made sure the timing belt was lined up and on properly. I torqued everything down to spec for everything and checked everything multiple times.

I started her up and it sounded fine on first run, but it was idling around 2000 rpm's! I had a check engine light on and so I reset the ECU. That seemed to help the idle, but it only brought it back down to around 1500 rpm.

I took it for a test run on the road and it drove well, but always stayed high in the rpm range.

I performed d-check mode on it and I got codes 33 and 42.

From what I have already searched on here, code 42 (i think) which is the speed sensor code might be explained by me switching in a new gauge cluster and that speed sensor being bad? Any ideas? I'm going to change back to the old gauge cluster to see if it solves this issue.

As for the code 33, idle switch, what do I do?

Any advice or opinions?

Thank you all for your help in advance!

Brad,

You've got the codes backwards, code 33 is the speed sensor, and 42 is the idle switch.

As for the speed sensor, does your speedo work? If so, that code is likely a false code.

Regarding the idle switch, that could cause your idle issues. You can adjust the TPS and set the idle switch based on these instructions

Josh,

thanks man! I figured I had the codes backwards, lol, I posted the thread at work and I was going off memory.

If my memory serves me correctly, the speedo did work, but I will definitely check tomorrow for sure.

Thank you for the link for the idle switch!

Josh,

Code 33 is still there after clearing the ECU. Still faulty you think? The speedo does work.

Yeah, that's kind of odd it's still there. If you do an active diagnostic with the green diagnostic connectors, does it show all clear, or is a code present?

I will connect the green connectors and check tomorrow. You are speaking of d-check mode correct?

Good deal.

When you say you changed out the speed sensor, did you replace the gauge cluster? Because that's where the speed sensor is located.
