Oil Pan Silcone
I have a small conundrum. When putting the oil pan on the motor it moved around a little bit and smeared the silicone sealant. As a result I think there may be a lip of silicone inside of the motor that is jutting out from the joint.
I used a scope a bought to look inside. I could only see one side of the motor and there was a little bit of a lip that squeezed out. It's more than I care there should be, but I don't know if it's worth taking the pan off again and redoing it.
Comments?

Re: Oil Pan Silcone
You already resplit the motor for a similar issue, why take the chance over an oil pan? lol
Also are you letting the sealant set a while before installing?

Re: Oil Pan Silcone
Yeah....I know....knowing me, I'll pull the pan and check it this weekend.
No I'm not letting it sit much. What I will likely do differently is apply the silicone on the block vs the pan so I can install the pan upside down without things moving around.

Re: Oil Pan Silcone
How much is it protruding. You say more than you'd care for, but, it's also you saying this so I don't know if you mean a 1/32" or a 1/4".
I think a certain amount is always going to squeeze out. Unless it's excessive, more than a 3/16" or so, I probably wouldn't sweat it too much. If a small piece breaks off it shouldn't hurt anything and. The screen on the pickup I would assume is sized such that if something passes through the screen it's too small to cause major problems.
There's not a lot of motion to really cause the lip to break off anyhow. I also wouldn't think the flow is real quick in the pan area that it's going to knock off the lip.
That's my thoughts at least.

Re: Oil Pan Silcone
I'd have to look again. I could only see a small amount. I'd say the lip may be around 1/8" in the area I saw.
Dan made a comment that is very true. Once the silicone is cured it really is pretty stout and shouldn't break off. I'll take a look at it again over the weekend and decide. I'm probably being overly concerned....

Re: Oil Pan Silcone
1/8" is fine.Like you said its not going to break off, that and the fact that if you seal it to the point where there is 0 lip protruding on the inside you will have probably put too little sealant...another problem.

Re: Oil Pan Silcone
Took some pictures of the silicone with the video boroscope. I probably won't mess with it. Granted it's only a small section.

Re: Oil Pan Silcone
Yeah looks like the piece has plenty of integrity. And if it did fall off it would get caught in the pickup no? Probably lots of small pieces would be worse in this situation.

Re: Oil Pan Silcone
I wish I could see the other areas, but I can't snake the boroscope around enough. The silicone is pretty rigid stuff, so it should be alright.
I agree if it were stringy small bits, that'd be worse.

Re: Oil Pan Silcone
That doesn't look too bad. I probably have had that much silicone hanging off my oil pan for 2 years and nothing bad has happened (knocks on wood).
I await your oil pan removal and reseal photo gallery. Did that rad scope cost more than a new oil pan?:P

Re: Oil Pan Silcone
I just pulled a 22T motor apart that I got from the Pick/Pull. It had plenty of silicone inside the oil pan area, only a couple of smaller detached pieces were stuck to the pickup screen. Oh, and an oil squirter was rolling around in there too. The motor did not look to have suffered any ill effects from this, I would not worry about it.

I'm not going to pull the pan. It should be alright.
Hahaha....I had bought that scope a little while ago for the random occasion. It actually wasn't that bad for what it is. I was trying to find a link to where I bought it but I can't find it at the moment. I think it was around $100.
