WRX Momo wheel

Post by Baddog »

Is the WRX momo wheel a bolt on affair for the first gen legacy? I have a friend who plans on buying a first gen and is looking at parts.

I know WRX front and rear seats fit.

Doesn't seem like its possible without not having an Airbag. Guess this is one of the ONLY non plug and play things.

The wheel fits on the splines on the legacy, but yeah, the airbag is several generations of technology newer than what came in the 1st gens so I think getting that to work would be about impossible.

So it would be possible just to remove the air bag light and never plug the charge in. But that wouldn't be very safe.

That's what I would do. I'm not sure exactly when airbags were improved, but the early ones were sometimes more dangerous than no airbag...

I have an STi wheel in mine, but I never had an airbag so it was a non issue. I should also note cruise control is not plug n play either, not sure if it works or not, but there's definitely rewiring if it does.

I have an 05? LGT Wheel in mine. My car didnt come with an airbag, so I dont have to worry about that. I had to re-wire the CC wires, but the horn and CC work so ya...

Looks like they have a slightly newer airbag.

My e30 had an airbag, I saw one deployed in a junkyard and it was terrifying  just a big burlap sack basically, thick hard rough material.

Revisiting this.

Can't I just swap the stalk over to the WRX Momo wheel from my 96 Legacy?

Also about the airbag. Can I just splice on the older style connector and make it work?

NO simply rewiring the airbag from a newer model is a bad idea.
Now if you love the look of that steering wheel then remove the airbag.
As for the horn and cruise control they can be rewired or plugs swapped.

Guess I won't be using an airbag then. Sadly it shuts off the passenger airbag.

Sucks they don't make good wheels for the earlier generation.

Horn and CC works now

There is no passenger airbag in the firstgen Legacy. So no worries for you. :)

I figure I'm OK with the Momo since earlier cars (91-some 92) didn't have airbags anyway. The car is already designed to help keep you safe in a crash with no airbag. An airbag is a "Supplemental Restraint System" anyway. I'll take my chances without one.

i wonder if the stock airbag unit will fit inside the wrx wheel?

i 've seen them changed out when swapping different (stock) steering wheels on the GD chassis cars

I have an 02 WRX Momo wheel in my 96 Outback. If I put the WRX clock spring in I "could" have cruise, but my cruise didn't work when I bought it so I haven't cared. After working at a body shop for many years I don't trust air bag systems, especially not early 90's ones. They are great when they deploy correctly, but the failure rate is really high.

I have the wrx momo wheel in 3 of my cars and in one of them, the airbag is hooked up. I work at a salvage yard and blow airbags everyday, crazy how violent they explode. I just changed over the connectors on the airbag, although I'm not sure if it would actually work in a wreck. I used a gen 2 Legacy clock spring as there are two plastic pins that protrude from the clock spring that line up with two holes on the steering wheel that allow the clock spring to turn with the steering wheel but on the gen 1 Legacys, those two plastic pins are on a horizontal plane when the clock spring is in its center position and on the newer 95+ Subarus, those two pins are on a diagonal plane when the clock spring is in its center position. So, if you were to use the gen 1 Legacy clock spring with the WRX momo wheel, those pins won't line up correctly. On my other cars with the momo wheel, I just removed the airbag charge which is held in by 4 8mm bolts.

I don't have an airbag so it doesn't matter. But finding the wheel is a pain in the ass because everyone thinks it is worth $400
