Shell Rotella T6. Full synthetic. Best value real synthetic out there. I run it in everything and it is awesome.

Is the Rotella a diesel specific oil?

Re: synthetic oils
Is it significantly cheaper than mobil1? I've always used mobil1 but I don't think it makes much if any difference which synthetic oil you use so I might as well get something cheaper. Right now I'm spending about $28 for 5 quarts at walmart.Alphius wrote:Shell Rotella T6. Full synthetic. Best value real synthetic out there. I run it in everything and it is awesome.

Re: synthetic oils
The Rotella is technically a diesel/gas oil, yes. It meets API certification for both.
T6 is the only full synthetic Rotella oil and is only available in 5W-40. T5 is semi-synthetic and available in more weights.
It is usually around $17-18 per gallon at Walmart.

T6 is only 5W-40. I don't know what the semi-synth T5 comes in.

Actually I can't remember which I've been using. Might be 10w40.

Re: synthetic oils
I don't know about amsoil, but I had a problem with Royal Purple consumption (as in my car was "using" more than with other oils). That combined with the price made me not interested. YMMV though.

Re: synthetic oils
Been using Amsoil since back in the 70's. No issues with consumption which I have heard other brands have. I started out with Mobil 1 in a Z-1 that I had. Didn't like the way it escaped out of the engine. Heard and learned about Amsoil and have used it ever since. I even have it in my air compressor as they make an oil for that.
At work we had many issues with storm sirens and compressors in unheated hose towers that would trip breakers in the winter when they would try and run. Switched everything over to Amsoil and no more tripped breakers in the winter. Any synthetic probably would have done the same, but I will stick with Amsoil.

Re: synthetic oils
Mobil 1 FTW. Consumption issues are issues with oil leaks, not the oil you're using
[edit: that is assuming you run a catch can]
