92 Legacy L won't start!!!!

Post by KennethP »

I have a stock 92 auto, non-turbo, fwd legacy. The car tries to turnover but it doesn't start. I tested the ignition coil which seemed bad. I changed it with a new one from Subaru. The car started then died within 2 minutes. After the first start it went back to just turning over. I also change the fuel pump and filter. The haynes book say other possible problems are fuel pressure ragulator, injectors, ignition ignitor, etc... I already spent $200 and this car still won't start.

You need fuel and spark at the correct times for the engine to work properly.

Have you pulled the plugs out to see if they're wet after cranking. Have you held the plug against the block while cranking to verify spark?

Some things I would check are ignitor, ECU, coil pack, cam & crank sensors.

If you check the stuff you should know forum, I have a sticky in there with links to factory manual scans, which have the testing procedure for all the stuff I mentioned.

Have you inspected the entire intake system for leaks?

I check the intake system for leaks. I can't find any. The car just makes the cranking sound but won't fully start. Does any one have any other ideas? :(

I second that... Check your plugs (clean and regap) and do a resistance check on your plug wires. When it ran for those 2 minutes, did it sound like complete ass, or did it run normally? It sounds to me like its not getting enough fuel head and/or spark...

Ran fine for the 2 mins. The plugs are new gapped to spec. The wires are new also. I'm going to have to take it to a shop I guess.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but did you check your battery cables/post connections? I was a dumbass once... I was in a parking lot and put my keys in (heard the beap) and turned it over; it cranked twice, and then the whole electrical system died. No dome light, no beap.. I thought I'd blown some major fuse, but it turned out that I'd forgotten to tighten the battery cable and it wasnt making a good (any?) connection. Just a thought though, and prolly a long shot, at that.
