hmm. that same thing happened to my 90 N/A motor. same exact location of the hole as well. and yea my friend was driving and i was in front in my otha subie. hahahah. tons of smoke holy crap!
but anyway thats y im swappin in a turbo motor now.

Oh, I forgot, if your friend was pushing the car past "normal" driving conditions and it resulted in a catasrophic engine failure then he should pay
at least half if not the whole sha-BANG! *pun intended* j/k, not about paying though.
I'm sorry to hear about this though, that sucks mang.

It'll bounce back, I just need to hook up the chain up to the engine and tranny and pull them now, all the bolts and connectios are off. I took the turbo off today, that was kinda a pain with the seized bolts on the downpipe.
