That's what i'm planning to do.
K&N panel filter then cutting the bottom of my Air intake box.
Im not gonna run around looking for a cold-air intake for my car.

i removed the resonator and snorkel.. but when removing the snorkel, we broke the clear plastic snorkel in half, and i saved the black pipe coming out of it that bolted into the stock airbox.. so air is coming from the fender well.. this is pretty much a CAI and it didn't cost me a dime.. added with a K&N drop in and throttle response has been so much better.. did the coffee can mod with an exhaust pipe that the exhaust shop bent for me and welded the bongs on for $10.. so i have a CAI for $10 plus a little work.. has worked out amazing.. like i said, better throttle response, smoother power/pull, better power in general, AND a slight improvement in MPG's.. i HIGHLY RECOMMEND DOING THIS! :D

OOOH! I want to have "bongs" welded into my intake
Seriously, good idea, I'm doing the same thing. Keeping the stock velocity stock is key as Legacy777 point out, not many aftermarket companies do this, only Stillen & K&N comes to mind. But of course those are the pricy intakes. (Stillen on my 350Z had a velocity stack and the typhoon on my STi as well)
