This looks like something I may have to replace. The car starts all the time, then sometimes nothing. It certainly isn't a dead battery.

Funny thing is, I have a quick disconnect for the negative cable terminal. Once I unscrew that, slide out the contact, and screw it back on, the car will fire right up.

FWIW in mixed driving around town i just got 23.4 MPG.

I just recently replaced the negative battery lead as it showed some slight corrosion at the ends. Is it worth replacing the positive lead as well? It visually seems fine. I don't think it's in bad enough shape to be the cause of my problem.

ok, so now the car will start, but if its been sitting for awhile (overnight lets say) i have to hold the key for 5-10 seconds, it hasn't not started yet, but im wondering what would be causing this? contacts are brand new...

I wonder if you have an injector or fpr that's leaking down fuel pressure.

You may want to get a fuel system pressure tester and leave it set over night to make sure the fuel pressure is holding.

I'd probably lean towards a leaky injector which is causing the cylinder to flood, and takes a little bit to crank over and clear it out....

Ah well that isn't quite what I expected... Burn I'm saving for 550s as we speak so maybe I should save more

Yeah Mine is exactly the same i do believe that inside the starter it is very similar to a relay when power is sent when you turn the key the starter receives that and then it switches like a relay, one of my freinds had a 97 legacy that did the same thing the contacts in his starter had become worn so that when power is sent to the starter they did not quite make the conection and the car in turn would not start, he found new contacts for like $15-$20 don't know where but from what he told me it is alot of work you put in more time then if you just got a new starter hope this helps sorry if there is any repeat i did not read the whole thread

I already replaced the contacts. Its actually really easy. It took me a little longer than most because that was my first time doing a starter, and especially getting inside of it. It still was pretty easy and not very time-consuming.
