Yeah, there's really not an easy way to get the gas tank off. Everything in the rear pretty much needs to come out. You may be able to leave the rear crossmember in, but it's probably just easier dropping everything as a unit.

Update. So got everything taken care of. about 700 miles on the current motor. So far so good. Nice and quiet.

No lifter noise. Had a 3" TBE installed and using an ebay WRX downpipe that I shortend.

Replaced all the soft fuel lines. Replaced the injectors and fuel rails. Used a different gas tank. New Walbro pump. And flushed out the hard lines with brake cleaner and air.
