Huh. That's interesting. Cuz it looked like the timing belt on the boostjunkie Legacy was also installed that way. But the engine ran... And on the surface it seems like it could run but would just have very low effective compression.

How does lining them up with the arrows instead of the notches explain the belt walking forwards as the engine turned?

No, it was the opposite on the BJ Legacy. The crank gear was correct but both cam sprockets were 45 degrees off because they were lined up to the arrows. I don't think that had anything to do with the belt walking on the BJ engine though. I think that was because of the bent cam sprocket. Once I replaced the cam sprocket and timing belt it doesn't seem to do that anymore.

Oh, I see... In this case it was the crank sprocket and in that it was the cam sprockets.

The question about the belt walking was directed to subyluvr2212... He said he had the marks lined up, but after rotating the engine they were 6 notches ahead.

Beats me. I still don't understand that one... It seems to me like once the belt makes one full revolution, the mark on the belt should line up with the mark on the crank, but I could always be wrong...

Didn't I ask you if you lined it up with the notch and not the arrow on AIM? :? I could have sworn that you did... u told me u had it lined up with the notch... So I threw that possibility out...

uhhh i think i mite be having a problem with timing on my hybrid motor. its an ej20g with ej22 heads and intake manifold. i lined up the notches on the cam gears and lined up the notches on the crankshaft gear. but the notch that i found was on the front of the crankshaft gear. is that right??

im a little confused now because when i try to start the car, it tries to fire but it seems as if the fuel is being sprayed out the intake. what do you guys think??
