Maybe Subaru thought they would not sell a lot. Besides they would have just
put the 2l in instead of the 2.2l. Why muck around with a new engine that
will cost the earth. Compare prices for the Legacy and your average V8 with
a little more power. Australia has seen a very quick growth over the past
ten years with the old V8 is slowly dying. It will never die but the turbo
is here and it is very strong.

As far as detunning goes you are half right. Of course they are not going to
sell a car that isn't efficient and well rounded. BUT if you think that
subaru did the best they could with this engine you are wrong. They
installed SOHC heads on the car that lets face it are less then spectacular
as far as flow goes (just talk to COBB tunning). Plus no intercooler, and
that is a rare thing. It has been long know that Japan has held on to there
Monsterous engines and highly tuned cars. Even though they have 101 octain
fuel subaru could have done more with the engine. If we would have gotten
the EJ20 from the RS with its quad cam higher flow heads and intercooler it
would have easilly made 190-200hp with our octain and would have faced off
better to the mitsubishi galant vr4 that produced 195hp. So in my book they
could have done much more, and frankly if it makes you feel better they
de-potentialized it.
