chat/answer to the indirect question about speeding

I'm 1 for 1 in the Subaru's I've owned. What is interesting however, I speed FAR MORE now than I used to, but I OBEY more traffic laws now than I used to (other than speeding of course). Believe it or not, I think that's made a big difference. Don't take my meaning to say that every time I get in the vehicle I'm disobeying the speed limit - it's not that way at all. I have a few favorite turns I hit on a regular basis (usually on Sunday morning when nobody is on the road - including the cops). I never speed in high volume traffic, or if I do, I will not go faster than 10 mph over the speed of traffic (safety reasons. The average American driver has absolutely no clue when someone is passing them). But if for some unknown reason I happen to be on a 3 lane hwy and I have a mile or so of room in my lane and relatively sparse traffic, and I'm on a stretch of road where there's no place for Evil Knevil, or a Smokie to hide - I go for it. But it has to meet ALL those conditions, otherwise no - go.

I think most people, that is to say what I'm about to state does not apply to everyone, but most people get their tickets in residential areas. To this day, I have yet to have attracted the attention of a cop on the highway. I have had 6 tickets over the course of my driving career, and every single one I picked up because I was violating a traffic law or a speed law in a residential setting (read: non-highway). Since I have changed my focus toward being an exacting, cautious, prudent and law obiding driver on surface streets and byways - no tickets, no accidents in 4 years (since I was 23 years old - that may have factored into the equation as well. My age... who knows).

I'm still a little concerned when I speed - it taps on my conscience from time to time. I have a mechanically flawless vehicle - so I'm not worried about anything blowing up on my car at 120mph. When I pass people at speed, I always flash my beems. Once when I'm a fair distance away, and again I flash them just before I hit the zone where I can still hit the breaks or manuver. I DO worry about the other guy quite a bit.

<get ready for the longest sentence in the world>

All it takes is for me to get the car cooking up to 95mph on my way to tripple digits and for some monkey-spank in a Buick Skylark going 45 mph, whom is completely oblivious of the fact his car comes equipped with a rearview mirror and a turn signal, to decide that the pavement looks better in the other lane for no apparent reason, and swerve into my lane at the precise moment when I hit the zone where physics dictate that there is absolutely no freaking way I could possibly do anything to avoid him. That scenario concerns me quite a bit every time I do it. Whenever I pass someone in a situation where vehicular contact means certain death, I consciously ask myself if that will be the last time I ever do anything like that on the public roadway ever again.

So there's my formula for ticket free driving. So far, so good. As far as risking life and limb, it is a problem I will continue to wrestle with for the time being. I have a feeling the time is near when I will abandon such practices... It simply is not worth it - but it is a helluva lot of fun damnit! I feel like a confessional crack addict... I need a hug.

Best,

Sambo

It has a lot to do with the kind of car you have. I go much faster in
my Legacy, and with fewer tickets than I did when I had the 'vette.
Course back then I was also young and stupid. You can be pulled over
in a corvette going 1 mph over the limit. The only ticket I've gotten
in the Legacy was for doing 74 in a 55, and that was on I-25 in the
middle of Denver at 4:30 AM on a Sunday morning! And everyone else
was going the same freekin speed. I have no idea why the cop picked
me and not the truck in front of me which I was drafting off of. In
fact, it was probably the truck that he actually clocked... of course
me being an idiot and admitting how fast I was going could be part of
the problem too :)

Don't ever say to the cop... "yeah I thought I was going about 76 or
so" when you know damn well the speed limit is 55 :)

chat/answer to the indirect question about speeding

*HUG* :)

there you go, pal.... now if only i could get a couple... have to go face two magistrates tomorrow and see about getting points reduced. i'm hoping they'll see me without having to set a court date. i'll gladly wait for them if they allow me. 9 points in 2 weeks is quite rediculous. especially considering this last time i was just trying to avoid an accident (i would have caused) and pull over to the right of the road far enough away from everyone that if my car stopped dead they'd have time to pass me.

what really rubs me the wrong way is that on that whole trip, i exceeded the speedlimit for a mere 30 seconds, and that was when he clocked me coming over the crest of the damned hill (was slowing down by that point). i hope to hell i can get 5 of the 9 points knocked off.... 2 on one ticket and three on the other and i'd be happy. shit..... at least i was nice to the cops......

later everyone.
