is a 3" exhaust the best??

Posted: Mon Apr 29, 2002 8:42 pm

I have just inherited a turbo back 3" exhaust from a WRX. Complete
with dual/splitter front pipe (no cat and all HPC'ed), mandrel bent
pipe work and big polished stainless straight through muffler with 4"
tip.
This all sounds really good - but after talking to a few people in
the "know", I am wondering about turbo lag, drop in torque, and
obviously the noise/drone factor.
So I dont know wether its worth the effort to make the install if its
going to cause some issues. Or if I should sell it and get a new
system made from scratch to suite the car.
I thought this system would be great after reading the threads on the
exhaust buy coming up!

Any Ideas?

Stu (nz)
91 legacy, ej20 turbo (jap specs)

I would say stick with that system, sounds like it will work great!
Actually, 3" is really the best size you can get, expecially for your
engine. Your muffler might make it a bit loud, but maybe not, you'll
just have to put it on and see. You can always swap on a quiter one
too. Good luck,
-Zak

The only problem I have with putting it all together on my legacy is
that I will have to cut up some sections to fit around the diff, and
lengthen the whole system as it is slightly different to the WRX.
Then if it is to noisey (which I think it will be) I will have to add
a resonator mid way. And if I am going to have to do that I might
aswell have started from scratch!
Maybe I should just keep the front pipe. BUt whats with the turbo lag
problem?

And cost is a factor, especially if there is a ton of work involved.

The turbo lag problem usually results from someone getting carried
away with the idea of "bigger is better" and this is not really true.
We are running some tests on headers and also have seen what Subaru
has on the Rally car and when you are dealing with the system and you
get to large before the turbo you will lose heat, velocity and pressure
the very things your turbo uses to turn the turbine wheel. After the
turbo things are not as critical by any means and a 21/2" or a 3"
should work fine. Turbo lag can also be a problem if you have a
turbo or intercooler such as a front mount that is to large.

So my ej20 turbo with the air/water IC and the 3" system described
below would be o.k. - apart from the noise?

I think you would I have a stainless 2.5" made by Super Sprint on my
car. It is a EJ22t with the same IC as you have a light flywheel,
overdrive pulley,HP fuel pump, modified to run 15lbs boost at 7300 rpm
and everything seems to work well. I think our biggest problem after
the exhaust is the stock exhaust manifold it is heavy and not very
well designed for maximum performance.
