93 Legacy GT-S2 Wagon

Hello

I recently saw the light, and traded in my 1992 Honda for a 1993 Japanese
Spec. GT-S2 Wagon, AWD 2.0L Turbo, 4-Speed Auto. It is completely factory
standard, and while I am (extremely) happy with the engine performance, I
am looking to slightly modify the suspension and/or wheels/tyres setup to
improve the handling. Wheels are standard -- 205/60/R15.

Does anyone have any advice on tightening the handling for wagons? Not
wanting to race or anything, just reduce the body roll (which can be
alarming on tight/windy roads, compared to my honda hatchback which took
corners nicely at speed).

Also - will I get any discernable increase in power from fitting a sports
air filter (K & N, Apexi, etc), or is a fatter exhaust the only way to go?

cheers
Paul

Paul,

Firstly, congradulations on the purchase and welcome to the group!

Sounds to me like the best bang for your buck would be new rubber to start.
Then maybe replace your shocks and struts with something a little sportier.
In doing so, you would get the response you were looking for with minimal $$
commitment. I Don't recommend the upgrade to 17" unless you intend to
upgrade the brakes and rotors, although that may be adviseable later...

Fatter exhaust is advisible for your application, however the performance
increase/$$ spent ratio is not very impressive. If I had to choose between
the two, I'd say you would get more bang for your buck from the intake, be
forwarned: the MAF sensor is an expensive item to replace if you fuxor it up
with the wrong intake. Search the archives for more info on that.

By the sounds of it, you are still in the honeymoon period of Subaru
ownership. After a while you might want to start adding and changing more
and more on the car. I would advise you to keep your purchases and changes
fairly straight forward to start. Later when you have a goal in mind
(rallycross, rally, autocross, sprints, horsepower, etc.) set your sights on
what will get you there and work your way through the proper upgrade path.

Or you can do whatever the hell you want and tell me to screw off because
you are having so much fun with your car and you aren't as serious about
what you do with it as some of the rest of us. That's fine too!

01=my two bits,

-Sambo

If thats the twin turbo be very carefull when considering a larger exhaust.
I have a friend outside of melborn who had one with a 3" exhaust from the
turbo back and the first turbo would always fail and have to be rebuilt.
Everyone I've herd from says don't go bigger than 2 1/2" all the way back.

Good things being mentioned here.....I'm mainly going to comment on the
cautions. If you do have the Twin Turbo, do not do anything or much to
it. The small turbo is a roller bearing turbo, and is easily over
spooled, and can cause like Ian said, need to be rebuilt.

As for intake....I'd really and highly recommend you just get a K&N drop
in panel filter, and remove the snorkel stuff in the fender.

I have replaced a MAF sensor $300 US. NOT CHEAP....worst thing is it
slowly went out...intermittently I would loose power....I chased this
problem for over a year. Second reason to leave the intake
alone.....you will be sucking hot air from the engine bay....plus you
will get more turbulent air, and MAF doesn't like that as much.

Check out this thread
http://pub1.ezboard.com/fultimatesubaru ... rationofsu
barus.showMessage?topicID=4495.topic

I just wrote this up like 10 minutes ago. It talks about me putting my
stock box back on and how much of a drastic improvement in engine idle
and smoothness there is. I also mention what I am going to do to
hopefully increase air flow for the stock box.

Instructions on how to remove the snorkel and such from the fender well
can be found here
http://www.remarcable.net/misc/legacy_o ... kusectomy/

Hope that helps.

If you have any questions, just holler.

Josh

Hi Paul and fellow Kiwi,

For local sources... King springs, KYB or Bilstein struts. Do the exhaust
and cone/pod type filter at the same time.... a 2.5 inch diameter complete
system from Autobend in Christchurch is good quality and if you get it trade
price through a friend / bonafide channel they are cheap!

For future posting, refer to your GT-S2 as a BC-BF with the EJ20 turbo
motor. The USA have a locally unique low-boost turbo EJ22 variant, and did
not get the EJ20 turbo.

For the USA crowd, the GT-S2 is a BBS wheeled, all leather interior, all
bells & whistles version of the GT (turbo EJ20 of course)

(long) On the air filter where I saw the most improvement was
when I managed to get the K&N under the front fender the combination
of a better flowing filter and the cooler air really improved
matters.
(5-10hp??)I measured the underhood temperature vs underfender on a
fairly hot day in medium traffic and came up with 177 degrees under
hood and 94 under the fender I then added some ventilation to the
under the fender location. There was a picture of it in the files
section titled "oil separator" but that may have been archived or
removed as it was old news. e-mail me if interested. I intend on
making the setup better now that I have a lead on some flex silicon
hose.
