Beware the 98 2.5 engine

The 98 2.5 as found in the Impreza RS has quad cams, but the bottom end is too weak for power modifications. My son has a 98 RS with a big Garret turbo and a big intercooler. It is quick, with minimal lag (higher compression equals quicker when not in boost), but he has eaten a cylinder liner and his crank has walked. The walking crank phenomenon is well documented by other performance tuners. In 99, they went to SOHC, but it is a really nice SOHC and they strengthened the bottom end.
There are hotter Subaru engines than the EJ22T, but I doubt if there are many that are closer to bulletproof.
ps I absolutely love this user group. Having the rest of you out there sharing tech tips is like a dream come true. I spent the first six yuears of Legacy Turbo ownership thinking I was the only guy in the USA who was interested in tuning these remarkable cars. Thanks to all pof you who regularly contribute.
