More than I can say for myself

Speedo cable broke causing no cruise control, engine check light, and engine stalling at idle, which I really can't understand.

Anybody that has a chance, get a spare cable cause nobody seems to stock them resulting in several days wait.

The cable replacement consists of two part numbers for 92 Turbo Legacy Automatic

37410AA151 about $30 to $40
737411752 about $9 to $13

Ben if I understood you correctly you elected not to run the air-to-water intercoolant water back into the radiator. That's good because it's not supposed to plumb into the engine cooling system. It is a seperate independent system, and should have its' own SEPERATE radiator.

Alan all I can say about swapping auto trannys is to check the trans part number

If the part number is the same they should swap

If the part number is NOT the same they might STILL swap, so if you have everything it might be worth a few hours to give it a try.

The tricky part, if the part number's not the same, but they still swap, (the part that you would probably like) is the 1998 Trans Control Unit might not receive or send the right signals to the 2000 trans so you might end up looking for a 2000 TCU too.

Since the TCU on the N/A cars talks to the ECU, and if the 1998 ECU expects certain signals from a 1998 TCU and doesn't like what it sees from a 2000 TCU, maybe you'll be looking for a 2000 ECU. But if the 2000 ECU doesn't like what it sees from the '98 engine, maybe you'll be looking for a 2000 engine...

Where do I stop?

Just kidding Al, I wouldn't expect MURPHY to take you that far outside, just a thought.

experiencing the EXACT same problem. My speedo cable
recently broke, so the speedometer quit working. But,
in addition the car will stall when I'm deceleratiing.
The RPM needle will shoot down and bounce, often
stalling the car, where the Check Engine light
proceeds to illuminate. Can the speedo cable really
be coorelated to the cause of the rough idle and Check
Engine light? Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

That's exactly what is happening There are certain faults that when
detected by the ECU that will affect the idle control circuit. Some
seem to do this more than others. For an example of this you probably
could look in the archives of the Subaru Vanagon board that is in
e-groups/Yahoo and see what those people went through dealing with the
VW's lack of a vehicle speed sensor over the years and the bigest
complaint was that the enginet would constantly stall.

the speed sensor is attahed to the back of the speedometer. With the cable broken or disconnected the ecu assumes your not moving.....

In my experience - no. I had disconnected speedo cable with no ill effects on idle.

On the Turbo STD it DOES have an effect for sure. I forgot to plug mine in after I had the dash out, ran like crap. I pulled over, plugged in the Speedo and suddenly it worked well again.

Well,
I've found that the problem lies in the lower
section of the speedometer cable. A strand of the
cable broke and wound itself into a twisted mess. I'm
out of Colorado Springs and I've tried every place
that I could find; Subaru Independent services,
salvage yards, parts stores, none of them carry it. A
speedo shop in town said they couldn't fix it. So,
unless I can try one more salvage yard, looks like
I'll be spending $40 and 4 days wait for the cable.
Does anyone have any idea if it would be unsafe to
drive it without the cable for 150 miles or so? I ask
this as it's still stalling and I don't want to break
down. Thanks for the assistance.
