Weepy power steering pump.

The power steering pump on my Turbo is leaking from somewhere and I can't tell where. I've removed the reservoir a couple times and cleaned everything up and looked around. The last time I even coated the gasket with Loctite gasket eliminator and it still seems to be leaking. There is power steering fluid settling behind and under the pump, then burning off. It's pretty annoying. With a dental mirror, I looked behind the pump and it seems that there may be a weep hole (like a water pump has) that's leaking. It's really difficult to tell though. Besides the leaking, everything works fine and the pump spins freely and does not feel loose at all. My question is do these pumps have weep holes that develop leaks like water pumps?
Thanks
Dave

Dave,
Moved your post to the engine forum.
Thanks

Thanks Josh. I read the descrtiptions of all the boards and decided that the power steering pump question really didn't seem to fit any of them. Thanks for fixing that. That's the one thing I don't like about this board so far, too many sections. Too much drill down time to find things. Anyway...
I decided last night that the reservoir cap itself is leaking, so perhaps that's where all the fluid is coming from. I'm going to hit the dealer this am and see if they have a new cap in stock.
Btw, I replaced some of the valve cover screw grommets last night. I'm going to do the other side today. Slowly but surely, I'm putting an end to the Smokey Valdeez.
Thanks

sweet,
Sounds good man. Let us know how the PS cap & new grommets work out.
You should really pressure wash your engine bay when you get everything fixed....or so you think. That way you'll be able to spot where the leak is coming from.
I just finished installing my whiteline springs & sti top mounts today.....a buddy & I worked on that pretty much all day. Definitely an ordeal. I haven't gotten really to drive the car much or push it......because I had ten tons of stuff in the trunk goin back to my place.
The only thing I didn't like about the springs were that the fronts didn't have preload on them when the strut was fully extended........guess I just have to be a little more cautious about jumping railroad tracks....hahaha.
Redesigned cap

I found out that Subaru has redesigned the power steering fluid cap for at least this particular car. Perhaps I'm on to something here. The P/N for the new cap is 34438AC040 and it requires a new strainer P/N 34417AC000. I didn't order them since they totalled about $75. Off to subaruparts.com. Not bad... they have the cap for $22.82 and the strainer for $6.08. Glad I waited. I'll replace this and the grommets on the driver side valve cover (I think the VC gasket is holding, so I'm not going to mess with it), clean it up some more and find the next leak. Between chasing down these leaks and the ones in my basement during last night's monsoon, I feel like I'm on a sinking ship.
Good to hear you got your suspension on ok. Feel free to come up here and do mine. I'm sick of working on... everything.

OTOH, I think I will replace that VC gasket since I want to clean up the cover and replace the filler tube gasket. It seems to be leaking too. At least I don't think I spill that much oil when filling her up

yeah I did that stupid filler neck o-ring gasket too. It was leaking pretty good.

Yeah, it seems to be.
Hey, I'm getting conflicting information on these part numbers for the cap and strainer. I checked with another dealer and was given the following info, but I think that these may be the old discontinued parts-
731053060 Strainer $10.95
34438AA000 Cap $15.40
?

I'm not sure what to tell ya. I'm not sure myself. Call some more dealers. See what they say......

Just a query. was it leaking from the wires that come out the back of the power steering pump (The fluid sensor) cos I've had the same prob. got some mates who r experiencing the same thing so maybe it's a common fault.

I'll have to go take a look. I don't recall any wires coming from the pump, but it's such a cluster around that pump that it's hard to see anything. There's a little hole at the rear of the pump near the bottom that appears to have fluid in it, but I just can't tell if it's coming from that (like a weep hole on a water pump) or if it's just collecting there from a leak above it.
Thanks,
Dave
