yeah so i was going to work this morning, driving like normal
everythings cool, minding my own business, when all of a sudden i
changed gears and the clutch pedal felt different-weird, i cant
explain it just feels different. The car was still fine though, you
know, shifted fine and everything. then i came to a stop, put it in
first ready to take off and the whole car started shaking VIGOROUSLY
until it was completely engaged in gear.

My car does that too, when I don't give enough gas (1500+rpm) it
vibrates on startup. Is it a worn clutch?

I think it's just how subies are.....there's been talk about this on
other boards.....I think it's more prevalent with some of the newer
legacies. I don't think there has been any super resolution out of all
the talk........not sure what to tell ya......slip the clutch a little
more.....will help keep deposits from building up.

You'll wear the clutch more....but not get the shudder......it's a trade
off.....I think it also depends on your driving style as well.

All my friends Subarus (all Turbos -92 -93) has the same problem, so it´s a common thing. Just like you say(write) it´s a Subie thing. Nothing to worry about.

The clutch was replaced on mine probably 15,000 miles
or so ago. And the shutter is present.

Again, the shudder comes from a flywheel that is heat checked...very common problem, and usually due to either a shop not resurfacing the flywheel (I ahve seen it many times!), or a flywheel machined incorrectly).

This is akin to your brake rotors being warped, causing the steering wheel to shake under braking

Adam, then how do you explain this phenomenon on practically brand new subarus, or ones that have had the clutch and flywheel replaced at the dealer?

There is just something about subaru transmissions and how some people drive. They just don't mesh too well......and you get the shudder.

As for machining the flywheel. Not really a good idea. I know this applies to the hydraulic clutches....not positive about the cable type. They design the clutch lever mechanism and such so that it releases at a certain...given...pre-determined point. If you machine the flywheel too much....you move that point, and the clutch will I believe grab too soon....(may be the other way around...grab not soon enough)

There have been people that have experienced this.

The thing is though, is that it never did this before, so what would
just all of a sudden cause this (warped flywheel or whatever). Many
of you mentioned that you personally drive a legacy like this or know
of someone who drives one with similar problems. so is it ok to keep
driving it like this. Does it do any other damage then the slighty
extra wear to the clutch as mentioned? it's kinda of annoying - makes
the car look like a piece of crap to others, skips my cd player for
multiple seconds at a time, etc. Would a new flywheel definitely fix
this? By the way the clutch is new - about 5000 miles on it. and i
assume a new flywheel is rather expensive for our cars/

Josh - simple really...subaru;s are not built to tight tolerances at all.

having owned a few myself (and on my very modded 2.5 RS, I went through a few
trannies), I never experienced such shudder.

As for resurfacing the flywheel, it absolutely can be done regardless if it
is a pull or push type clutch, cable or hydraulic..it jsut needs to eb done
correctly, and according to the specs that the clutch manufacturer calls
for.....or else you end up with a totally "doo-doo" setup.
