Ok I know its been a while but I've been working my ass off to put
some funds together to get the new car on the right track. Its a
1995 Legacy L. AWD, 5 spd, ABS. I got a job at a local performance
shop so i have alot of tools and resources availible as far as
finding parts, machining custom parts etc. Heres what i was thinking
of...

Would the turbo system (turbo, exhaust headers, downpipe, intake)
bolt onto a 95 ej22? Was it even called the ej22 in 95? What parts
besides the actual system will i need to swap (wiring harnesses, oil
pan, etc). And how much of a gain is even likely. Is it worth the
time and money to do the install?

You could theoretically swap all of the stuff on, but since the EJ22
was a higher compression engine, you'd have to use less boost.

Injectors are going to be smaller, so you'll have to make sure that
the fuel system is up to the task. An AVC-R and S-AFC (or
equivalent) would be highly recommended.

I don't know anyone who's tried this on an EJ22, but plenty of
Impreza 2.5RS guys have done the swap with little problem: usually
you need the engien crossmember for exhaust clearance, possibly a
spacer for proper turbo placement...

So in theory i could swap many of the internals over also to make up
for the compression difference (pistons/rods). Also would i need the
ECU from a turbo engine along with the wiring harness? That is my
main concern with the project. I remember hearing that the ej22t
engine ran stock with 8 lbs of boost but they could be run up to 14
lbs with a controller. Do you think that i would be able to run 8
lbs and make about the same power as the ej22t being run at 14lbs if
i stuck with stock ej22 internals? Sorry theres so many questions.
I just dont want to get halfway throught the build up and encounter
something that would lead to a dead end.

The Ej22t ECU would work but it would limit boost to 8-9 lbs without
a controller of some sort. The EJ22 should be able to handle 6-8lbs of
boost,and a bit more with add-on items. We are running the EJ25 at
8lbs and up to 10 lbs with a water to air IC, a good fuel pump, and
the enrichment provided by a torque chip. I am running 15-17 lbs
boost with the Ej22t with the same setup and we have one running 26lbs
with all the stops pulled out
(big injectors, tons of fuel, intercooler, big turbo ect.)

So assuming i do the swap using the stock ej22 ECU i would be pretty
safe keeping the internals the same? Would a larger fuel pump and
and an intercooler allow me to use about 8lbs of boost with almost
no worries (as long as i dont hammer on the engine for several back
to back full throttle runs or cruise the highway at 70 in 3rd gear)?
Also what type of hp/tourque can i expect form the stock ej22 with 8
lbs being fed through it?

You would be safe doing that, one nice thing about a high compression
engine is that they are good at low rpm's. The new WRX is an example
of a low compression engine that is not good at low rpm's and that is
the most common complaint on that car. On hp I have been told that one
pound of boost is good for about 5-8 hp depending on what other mods
are done. An exhaust is a good idea and a intake probably going to be
needed with this type of setup.

Thanks. Youve been really helpful. Now i just need to convince my
parents that a forty hp boost isnt going to make my car as fast as a
corvette...(which was an immediate comparison when i told my dad what
i wanted to do)
