i am rebuilding a turbo motor.. now when i took off the heads and sent em out to my magic place... the tops of the pistons look like bare metal to me... was this on certain motors only, as the one im rebuildding is a 94, my car is a 91.....

lemme know, as i heard that these motors are supposed to have these special pistons.

The only thing that I have ever heard of as far as being special other
than being the proper part # is that a SAE paper said they were of
Thermalloy construction and that is ???? I would guess that it might
be some special type of casting or alloy.

I know that in an effort to reduce internal friction between engine
components (to help free up some horsepower), SOA started coating their
pistons with Molybdenum, acts like a metallic lubricator, but this was
started in 1995 and of course then, not on any turbo pistons. Hope this

I'm not so sure about that 1995 thing. I could have sworn Dave's
Library had a fact sheet with something about Molybdenum in the BC-BF
generation.

Not sure where ceramic comes in. I have heard of Ceramic rings.

Molybdenum is a metalic element to to enhance hardenability,
strength, toughness, and wear and corrosion resistance.

To throw a further spanner in the works.

Subaru have never released a production car with true forged pistons.

Subaru also made a piston that was stronger. Most call this a forged
piston but they aren't.

The alloy they use has a more compact grain and look more like a true
forged piston than the normal pistons, but are still cast pistons.
