OK guys - need some help! Not sure if I posted this before, but I am sure the experts know the answers straight away

I am finally picking up the Legacy turbo ('91, pearl white) this Thursday AM). Car needs rear struts, and we haev the GR2's in stock. Obviously, I mind as well do springs too, but I hear so much conflicting info. I do not want Whiteline, nor do I want H&R.

Many ahve told me that aftermarket springs for any GC8 Impreza drop right in, give the car a nice drop, good ride quality, etc. This would leave me with companies like Tein and Eibach to choose from: much better than H&Rb and WHiteline IMHO.

However, others have said that in order to use an Impreza spring, you need an Impreza strut hat/top mount...is this true? If so, will the Impreza GC8 front and rear mounts bolt in to a BC chassis Legacy ('91)? If they do, it looks like tein pillowballs all around for me (Hva em in an RX7 and my GVR4 and love them to death)

the other option is to use the BH Legacy springs, but again, some say it will work, others say it won;t...I just need to know exactly what to get so I can take it apart and put it together the first time correctly.

Now for rims: more of a survey. As said above, car is Pearl White, some miles (159k), but great shape. it will be fully tuned, new water pump, etc. this week, probably a timing belt by summer's end jsut so I am on the safe side. A?C is broken too, but soon to be fixed by me.

For rims, here are what I narrowed it down to:

Volk Gram Light, 17 x 7.5, bronze
Prodrive P1, gold 17 inch
Prodrive P7, gold 17 inch

Here's the deal on the springs to my knowledge.

All of the Subaru suspension stuff will pretty much "physically" fit in any other subie. I.E. the two bolt holes where the strut mounts to the spindle is the same, and the top mounts where they mount to the car are the same. After this point.....all bets are off as to compatibility.

Starting with springs.....there are two main things....well actually three: First is the spring coefficient. According to the info I have in the FSM, the front springs run pretty much the same for the AWD between sedans and wagons, (for the same type of car). The rears however are a little different. With the wagons, you are going to have a bump in spring coefficient. For example. The 90 AWD sedan rear springs have a spring coefficient of 23.5 N/mm. The 90 AWD wagon rear springs have a spring coefficient of 33.3 N/mm. So for the first sorta conclusion......you can't.....nor shouldn't swap springs from a sedan onto a wagon.

Second thing you need to look at about the springs is the overall height of the spring while compressed......I know that for the AWD vs. FWD rear springs....there is goin to be a difference, due to the location of the bottom mount point for the rear springs. It is offset and raised slightly for the AWD rear spindle, compared to lower and in the center of the hub for the FWD. So there is strike two for just swapping springs over from the GC8....

Third thing.....isn't as important.....but the diameter of the top and bottom of the coils. I am pretty sure that all the subies have the same dimensions for the lower and upper portions of the spring. I would see this to be so, so that manufacturing costs are kept down. Just my thought on the matter. I have heard stuff goin around that the FWD & AWD rear top mounts are different....but have nothing to confirm that though. I would think you wouldn't have any issues between the turbo legacy and impreza.

Next thing is struts......Damping force, have an expansion and compression value for each type of strut. For a heavier car you are going to have higher values. For the rear struts on the legacy, there is more then a 100 N difference between sedan and wagon

Legacy Sedan AWD Rear struts: Expansion: 677 N Compression: 265 N
Legacy Wagon AWD Rear struts: Expansion: 834 N Compression: 324 N

This is all at a piston speed of 0.3 m/sec


So.......with all that information......I would say you are going to get a little screwing handling characteristics if you put GC8 struts/springs on your turbo wagon. They will most likely "physically" bolt up no probs......after that......I couldn't tell ya how things would work out.

What you have against the whiteline springs?

If after all this you still aren't happy.......get coilovers......that's about your only option that is left.......DMS baby.

Josh - actually my car is a tubro sedan, not wagon. The struts I am using
are for a Legacy Turbo sedan (GR2), the srpings would be for an AWD, JDM spec
WRX ( GC8 chassis) sedan

Well then the values for springs and struts are going to be closer to
what the GC8 has.....prob still not where they should be......but much
closer.......give it a shot.....they'll bolt in......

Josh - sop they will bolt in with the stock Legacy Turbo front and rear strut
tops, or do I need the GC8 strut tops as well?

Ya i'm interested in what you have against whiteline too. All products i
have used from them are great, and a decent price. They make springs made
specifically for the legacy and i have mine paired with KYB AGXs and they
work, very well. They lowered the ride hight by about ~1.5 inches.

I ahve just never fopund them to ahve a correct spring rate, much like H&R.
I much prefer the Eibach or even tein rating,s as they always seem a better
overall match for the KYB's we always use. It is more of my own personal
taste though
