20w50 amsoil synthetic....bad choice?

Hello all,
The person I bought my car from always ran amsoil synthetic series 2000 20w50 racing oil. He was from Texas, so its pretty hot down there. I live in vermont. I wouldn't run this in the winter, but I think about it in the summer. It seems pretty heavy, but it is a good synthetic, and its what the car has always had, so I am hesitant to switch to something else. He went with a similarly heavy oil in the gearbox. What do people think about this? What weight oil should I use?
Thanks
Micum

Yeah, it should be okay in the summer. Since it's a full synthetic, it is thinner than dino 20W50, so you're not putting in the absolute thickest oil possible.

And you are correct in wanting to stick with the oil it has always used, since whatever additives that particular oil has in it have kept the various oil seals from leaking too much, if any, oil.

It's probably safe to switch brands once or twice, but don't make a habit of it. I have used Valvoline DuraBlend partial synthetic for the car's last 10,000 miles and am happy with it, so I'm not changing...

You can just run the same brand of oil, different weight.
