legacycentral bbs

i recently bought a mark 1 legacy 2 litre turbo saloon,it was
manufactured in japan early 1995,im here in ireland so its the
standard european rs model,imnot very mechanically minded but it is
in standard form...i.e standard wheels,exhaust etc....even still has
standard subaru radio/cassette !!! it has 130,000 miles
(210,000km)....ive noticed a few problems with it....

1. when idling/cold it rattles alot (tappets im told ???)

2. 5th gear now cannot engage !!!

3. leaking sunroof,drivers door and rear boot.....

any suggestions of cures for the above ???

i love the car and its very unusual as all the local boy racers have
impreza's so its different and the younger ones dont appreciate what
it actually is!!!(ive left a few of them wondering !!!)

i dont mind spending money on it to put it right.... any suggestions
on moderate up grades...exhaust,suspension,ecu,air intake,gearbox etc

any info will be appreciated ....

Good to here from some real Subaru owners and not just Impreza´s(hehe), just kidding. The fist thing I would do is to fix the leaks and the other stuff. After that I would raise the turbo boost to atleast 1.0-1.1bar, not higher anyway. I own a 93 Turbo Estate and run it with 1.1bar and I can only say this: It´s fun.... fun to leave the Impreza´s behind

The noise when cold & idling is most likely the tappets. I'm pretty
sure your motor didn't get the hyd adjusting ones. So should be a
simply adjustments on them.

The 5th gear thing I'm not really sure. How does the rest of the tranny
work? It's possible the linkage could be messed up a little, or you
might have more severe problems. Does it grind when you try to put it
in 5th gear? Or just not go in?

The leaky sunroof thing is kinda common. It's usually either plugged
vents or the sunroof pan is leakin between car body.

I'm pretty sure the sunroof thing was detailed on the legacycentral bbs.

Yep, engine noise is defo voodoo tappets. I'm in UK and have this prob. A good oild flush and change using 15/50 synthetic like Mobil 1 motorsport or Carlube motorsport along with Wynn's Hydraulic valve additive (if necessary) will get rid of the noise. When it starts making the noise again you know it's time for another il change!
