Dash/cluster bulbs

Does anyone know exactly how many bulbs are behind the intrument cluster, and dash. I've got cruise control and rear defroster aswell. I'm not concered as much with the turn signals/cel/oil/etc lights as I am with the ones behind the speedo/tach/etc. Also how many are in the manual climate control area? I'm assuming these are all clear led's with green nipples, as thats how it was in the radio. If anyone knows the size of the bulbs that'd be awesome, large and small are good sizes btw

. Also, do the seatbelt release buttons light up What about the mirror switch? how do you remove the cigarette lighter? I tried prying it out like the rest of the switches but no good.

I'm about to do the same thing. What I plan on doing is pulling a bulb and going into either a radioshack or automotive store and have them match them up. For the number of bulbs... i guess you'll have to count them up.

fyi the mirror switch on the 90 does have a back light. i think only the 90 and 91 had that as my both my 93s did not.

My 92 has tabs inside the mirror direction switch that a light could be attached to. They're powered when the dash lights are on, but there's no socket. I contemplated soldering something in there, but decided instead to use those lines for my boost gauge illumination (pulled them out of the socket).

Hehe, I had thought there was no light behind that because I had switched over to a 91 mirror switch (it has the lil bumps around the arrows). Guess I'll look into putting a light in there. Seems like I'm going to have to take it all apart and count the bulbs :\

Just took my old one apart, and it looks like they were made from the factory with a spot for the power folding mirror option, just not the switch(don't know abou the motor either Haven't looked into that. I'm not sure how it all works but homeslice if you wouldn't mind could you tell me how many gold connector tabs you have on the back of your mirror switch, even better would be opening it up and taking a look at it but you don't have to do that.

From what I understand, the switch with power folding has the same connector; it just uses pins that aren't used on our cars. Same thing on the mirror side: the connectors are the same but use pins that are unused on our mirrors.

So does this mean we have the motor for the mirrors but it just isn't used?

Heh, I wish. :)
I don't think our mirror connectors even have contacts in those pin positions.

sorry didnt see you guys asking me stuff......on the later model mirror switchs you can put a bulb in it. but you cant order that bulb from subaru. when mine blew i took another dash bulb and switched bases. the mirror switch on the back has the same amount of pins. but the harness itself does not have the extra two wires run to it. and same with the mirror conector two pins shy. the switch is diferent on the front because the is no control for it. but from what i could see the switch internals were the same.
here is what one looks like on my car.

Hey, homeslice, when you installed your power folding mirrors, what did you do about the left/right mirror issue? Are you just making do with the "wrong" mirrors or did you swap on the glass from your stock mirrors? I tried to remove the glass from a stock mirror once and couldn't figure out how to do it (if it's even possible).

i can see fine with the jdm mirrors. they adjust enuff

Cool; are they both curved? I wouldn't think it would be a problem as long as the right side mirror is curved. Without that it might affect the field of view... I like how good our cars' visibility is. There's almost no blind spot if you adjust your mirrors right.
dark gauges --bad bulb?

While we're on the topic of dash and illumination, i was wondering if anyone had an idea about my dark gauges..
i know that the fuse for the gauges and the tails are the same, however, my tails work and my
illumination is absolutely dark.. no dash lighting whatsoever.. the cruise and rear defrost light up when activated, as well as the power window button.
could it be that the bulbs are burned out and need replacing? has anyone done this and could they walk me through it?
My Haynes manual doesn't say anything about it..
thanks.

Have you adjusted the illumination level that is located on your turn-signal stalk? I'd start there, you can turn them off if it is turned all the way down.

Mine dash lights don't go all the way off. They just get really dim. Maybe they changed this on later cars?

i thought i was clear enough...

maybe i wasn't clear enough when i posted that last question.. yes, it HAD occurred to me to check the dimmer, in fact, it was my first suspicion that it was somehow stuck in the low position, but that would mean it still could light up slightly.. as of now, i have no dash lighting whatsoever.. the climate control buttons light up when activated, but don't glow like they used to.. you should be able to see what the function of each button is, right?
i just replaced my alt (see engine forum for details) and that didn't help at all, either.
any thoughts?

It could be a bad illumination control unit.

Where is this - mine are not coming on for a while - then sometimes they always come on - not for two weeks now though

The illumination control unit is mounted just below the turn signal flasher, to the left of the glove box. I think you need to remove the glove box to access it.
