A/C - Fan issue....

When I turn the vent fan between say heat to vent, or from defrost to vent, I hear a groaning sound from behind the dash. It only occurs while the system is changing the air flow between the floor/dash/defrost vents. I imaging there is some electronic servo or something that controls which vents get the air and it is probably sticking or going bad. Can anyone give my idea on what I should be looking for to address this?
At lunch I turned the vent on and there was no noise and the vent air was blowing out the defrost vents, then I hit a slight bump and the groaning started as the air flow slowly changed from the defrost vents to the dash vents (where it should have been!) Help before summer gets here!
