Hello all, I want to paint my stock spoiler...its fiberglass I believe. I'm actually considering doing it myself, because I don't plan on having it that much longer anyways, but for now, it stays. So I figure I probably need to take all the old paint of, as its peeling really bad. What grit sandpaper would I want to start with? I figure I would start with something coarse and work down a couple steps to something finer, which would be like...what? 800? Any suggestions on this process for both preping for professional painting and/or home spray lacquer jobbie.

Use some paint thinner or something along those lines to help get rid of the peeling. Probably 200 is best to start with. You shouldn't need anything above 600 grit.

Use 200 to get rid of any of the bad spots, then move up to 300, do that dry, then wet, then move to 400 dry, then wet. At this point, I'd probably use a tac cloth clean things up, and prime the spoiler with a few coats. Then dry & wet sand the primer with 600 grit. If you feel the need to reprime and sand, do that.

I haven't really used the home lacquer kits, but I do know from rattle canning stuff and clearcoating, the results aren't too good. maybe the lacquer stuff is better.

You dont have to take off all of the old paint. just sand it to the plastic where the stuff is peeling, the rest of the spoiler can be scuffed where the paint is still good. then just prime the areas where there is no paint on the plastic
