just wanting to be safe, can the cams move freely and still be lined up bfore putting cam belt back on? :?
i know it sounds stupid, but better safe than sorry!

If it's single overhead cam, then yes.

If it's dual overhead cam (quad cam), then no -- if you let the cams turn arbitrarily it's possible for the intake and exhaust valves to hit each other.

vrg3 - Do you know which engines are non-interference? Is it all of the SOHC engines? And the DOHC being interference designs?

All DOHC EJ/EG/EZ engines are interference.

Early SOHC EJ engines are non-interference.

I'm not sure about later SOHC EJ22s. I have heard that sometime around 97 or 98, when they bumped up the compression ratio, they created a potential interference condition.

I thought the eg33 was non-interference? It is dohc but I think the intake cam is run by a gear connected to the exhaust cam not the timing belt.

Aren't all sohc engines non interfence by definition? At least valve-valve.

Okay, I stand corrected then.

I believe the interference SOHC engines are piston-valve interference.

yeah, but for any sohc engine, subaru or otherwise, there's no way to bend a valve just from rotating the cam right?

Yeah, I can't imagine how you could...

In a DOHC if the cams slip while the belt is removed it isnt that bad, the cam will only turn a small amount and you can figure which way to turn to "reverse" it.

cams moved
