We've had an IRC channel for a few months, with some good participation at times, but some discussion with ciper and THAWA led to the idea of a simple, Java-based IRC client that had a very low level of technical knowledge to participate in.
So, without further discussion, i'm introducing the #legacycentral chat:
http://legacycentral.org/irc.html
SUN or Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine is required for this to work. There's a link to download it at the above page, it's simple and should work for both Internet Explorer and any version of Netscape/Mozilla/Firefox that's out there. OSX users should have Java available via Software Update, OS9 users...should replace their ancient machines
Please post comments, problems and whatnot here.

If you like it, then it was my idea.
Otherwise blame it on DLC and Thawa

Come join us. This will run on pretty much any recent version of java.
Sometimes you will see our names but no reply. Give us a minute to return

This client is opening an irc connection from the computer, right? I imagine many workplaces block port 6667, therefore making this web interface not work.

When I type in 'Dr Nick' as my Nickname it tells me that it's already in use. Is someone hijacking my identity?
Forgive me if that's a stupid question but I'm new to chat online...

the server that the channel is on (efnet) is in no way related to legacycentral, so your nick can very well be in use by someone else. esp one as common as dr nick. Also there is no nick reservation on efnet. Also if ya join stay for a lil while, someone will show up in a bit. :\

just to give my experience....I couldn't connect at work....most likely firewall issues, because the same laptop at home works fine.

No. If you cant get it working then too bad for you. We aren't here to support you if you cant get it working. The java irc site isnt even ours, we are borrowing it!

I may have taken that the wrong way, but that seemed a harsh reply to a simple question.
I had no problems getting it to work and had a brief chat with Josh, THAWA and jasongrahn with no problems at all. I just thought it would perhaps be sensible to have a link instead of either (a) having to bookmark it or (b) find this thread and click the link.
Yours defensively...

I wasnt trying to be harsh, Im just afraid of this thread will grow to 5 pages long from people who cant get it working.
