well its time to replace my old GR-2's with some new ones. can someone recommend a place i can pick up a set of four? looking for good prices and a trustworthy online place.

Tirerack. Doubt you'll find them cheaper once shipping is included.

$70 front each one
$108 rear each one....
$356 total...OUCH.....need to be under the $300 range unfortunalty....

tirerack is stupid when it comes to 90-91 rear struts. Order the struts from a 92-94 and it will give you the correct price.

I don't get it... are you saying that the price Tirerack charges for the rear struts for 90-91 model Legacy's are incorrect? I was under the impression that they cost more because of the whole tappered spring and topmount.

That is why they cost more, but there's no reason for them to cost more. The strut is the same. Buying 90/91 rear struts from tirerack is a waste of money.

The lower part of the spring, which is touching the strut is the same size if you have tapered or not tapered.

IIRC, I got 'em delivered to my door for $257. I think I posted it in another thread.

spring compressor. anything work besides a spring compressor to compress the strut springs? i dont have one handy and dont know where to find one to be truthful....

You really do need a spring compressor. You should use one meant for McPherson struts; I have tried a pair that weren't designed with struts in mind and they just couldn't grab right, especially since Subaru springs tend to have relatively few turns at relatively high pitch.

AutoZone lends them for free with a $40 deposit if I remember right. You should also be able to buy them from Sears or from some auto parts stores too.

First know that many of the ebay spring compressors can be purchased for $9.99

stant093 - I'm not sure exactly you mean by how many foot pounds the spring compressed... But stock springs are something like 134 lbs/in and have something like 6 turns. The spring compressors typically fit over 2 turns and compress them by something like 2.5 inches. You typically use two spring compressors on the spring at a time. So each compressor would be handling about 500 pounds of force, maybe, give or take?

Those ciper linked to look really cool... I've never seen them in real life, though; I've just used the type on sale on eBay. The better ones use acme threads. I have done okay with them several times, but I can definitely see the attraction of a compressor that doesn't require you to put any part of your body in the path of a potential runaway spring!

FYI I found that I only needed the spring compressor for the fronts - the rears you can basically push on far enough to start the threads and then hit with an impact gun.

Definitely need it for the fronts, though. And you get what you pay for with spring compressors. I use one of these: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/D ... mber=43753 - although as mentioned you have to line it up just right as my Sube anyway has very few winds to the spring.

The cheaper compressor with the two single shafts is like building a house of cards and then trying to sit on it. Except the cards are like razor blades and they jump up in your face. Scary.

I know what you mean. I always get afraid when I compress springs with those. Imagine how fast it would snap your wrist off.

well i decided to not weld up the spring compressors, and found a good set i can borrow locally.


what struts will fit on a 91 2wd sedan? im curious to know how wide of an array there is for this MY. And will 4wd front struts bolt right up, i mean its an identical setup from a 4wd, only the two front are drive wheels.

The front should be the same, but the rears will be different as they attach to different parts of the rear hub.

i reccomend discount tire direct. they were more helpfull than tire rack and had better prices on the gr-2 for my 90 fwd sedan.

Ok I just want to get this straight. I have a 91 Turbo. So the 92 GR-2s will fit the 91 for sure? Will the AGXs for a 92 then also fit?

Okay, I'm gonna order some GR2's myself. I looked up 92 Legacy GR2's on TireRack and they came up to $58 a piece, I checked the front left and right, and the 4WD rear left and right...

Does that sound right to everybody? If so I'll order them tomorrow...
