Oil Squirter Issues

No I don't have any problems but in talking to a mechanic, he mentioned that the only problem he has ever seen with his SS or any other is that he has twice seen oil squirters in the oil pan. He said that he doesn't know how they fell out, but that they did. He suggested that on an oil change, jack up the driver's side of the car and then stick a pen magnet or something in there and see if you find anything. If not, then you should be good.

I don't know what the problem would be if they fell out, but the only way to fix it is to pull the whole engine apart I guess. Just an FYI.

Funny,
I have been meaning to post about that. My junkyard engine had three of the squirters in the pan. Two of them were in perfect shape, but the third looked like it had been hacked by the crank or something. I wonder if there is a way to prevent them from falling out on a rebuild. :?: I would hate to have my $x,000 built engine get fouled by a squirter getting spun up in the crank.

Oh, and I'll post up some pics of the squirters in the near future for curious folks to see...

hehe, I was just reading up on these today aswell, so they were physically on the crank? How do they work?

Are the squirters threaded into an oil gallery? If they are, some red Loctite might be good enough to secure them.

If they fall out, does that just mean you get oil dribbling into the center of the crankcase from the opening? Like, could you just pull them out of the oil pan with a magnet, stick 'em in your pocket, and be okay?

haha, I don't have any clue vrg3. All I know is that they squirt oil unto the underside of the piston I think to help cool it down. I'm assuming the sit in some holes or something and must not be in there too tight if they can fall out. I don't think the car will run worse with them sittin in the pan, but I don't know exactly how everything is setup concerning these little do-dads. :)

well look at it this way, the 22b doesnt have oil squirters and it's doin fine :)

I'm guessing that if they fall out, you just get oil dribbling or squirting into the crankcase without direction. They wouldn't be directed up to hte piston anymore. It sounded like, between the mechanic and Matt, that you can just pull them out of hte pan and walk away.

Yep,
I pulled the pan off as part of my dismantle and heard this little metallic tinkle. I thought, WTF is that? I reached in and grabbed one and cleaned it off and it was a squirter. Like I said there were three total.

I should finally be getting around to splitting my block this week, so I will try and get some pics of both the squirter in place and the hole that the fallen ones left. Somebody had posted a pic in one of the NASIOC arguments about 22B vs EJ22T, but I am too lazy to go find it and cross link it. Maybe a job for Helpinator?

well from what i've read (please dont let this turn into a 22b block vs legacy turbo block thread) the blocks are the same jusdt no oil squirtres on the 22b, might be capped, might not even be drilled, but we wont know until someone dismantles a 22b.

I just meant the search for the pic that shows the squirters. Personally, I could care less about the 22B debate...

I can't tell from the picture how they're attached.

Matt, are the squirters threaded?

To add to the already sufficient evidence that this is apparently common, morgie pulled an oil squirter out of his engine; it was rattling around:

Yes, they are threaded. It appears that they attach to a "beam" that runs across the base of the block next to the crank. Damnit guys. I was gonna replace the crossmember on my Legacy GT conversion tommorow. Now I want to see this more closely and will likely spend the morning tearing apart that block some more.

haha, sorry Matt. I just hope mine are still in place. It's just nice to say that you have oil squirters. It would suck to put in your cars bio: "Strong engine, many mods, one cylinder has an oil squirter."

I believe there is a spot to stick your finger in there and go to town but I'm not entirely sure, the sae boxer pdf has more info on it.

yeah, seems to be a common problem... will have to find a way to prevent them from falling ! :(

if they fall, they drop the oil pressure.. and putting them back might be a serious pain in the a**

22b engines had those squirters too.. curious to know if the guys at 22b.com ever had this problem.

does the 2.5STI have them too ?

I thought the 22B did NOT have those. Were did you hear that they did??

on 22b.com forum, they cited/enumerated some similarities between our 2.2l turbo and the 22b engine, and oil squirters were among them. The only visible difference was, apparently, an additional crank-case breather/vent on the 22b.

Crazy. That's cool.

that is, of course, if my memory serves me right.

I've asked them about the squirters... let's see what they have to say.. ;)

Interesting. That one guy suggests that the old EJ20G's also had squirters. That is the first that I have heard of this. I do have to say that I am surprised that more folks haven't bought up cheap closed deck EJ20G's and replaced the heads for high HP builds...

The infamous squirters. Sorry for the poor focus, but you can still see that the left one is dinged pretty good.
