Hi legacy pals,
I just bought an ej22t for my 92 legacy, it as 224000 km, which is around 180000miles i guess. It turns great, but i wonder if 224k is a lot or is it still within safe limit for tuning.
I took apart a couple of 2.2na well over 250k and they were all in great shape, but how about the ej22t.
An i/c and 11-12psi of boost are in plan, has well as the parallel fuel rail mod with wrx fuel pump. Should i give it a full rebuilt or is it safe like it is.
Thanks for putting my mind at ease, keep on rockin...

If you have the time, ability and money, a full rebuild is the way to go.
Otherwise 220,000 is a low mileage for longevity but when you start pumping up the HP more and more it can get sketchy.
My Legacy will be getting an IC and 12psi as well in the coming months and also has 222k on it. So if mine dies at any point I'll let you know.
Replace low ticket items like seals and even gaskets before you get the engine into the car. It might save you headaches later on.

Look at it this way. One of the fastest Turbo BC's on this board, Boostjunkies old car, was running something like 16psi on stock everything and had 211k miles (almost 340,000 kilometers).
His car ran shockingly well as well.

I wouldn't really worry about the engine internals, but personally would to the headgaskets while it is out. Also, main bearing seal and cams o-rings would be well advised. Water pump and oil pump service would be a good idea as well. And lastly, pull the oil pan and make sure you don't have piston squirters sitting in the bottom. You can put it back together without them, but it is a good idea to remove them if they have fallen out...

What would the effect on oil pressure for lost oil squirters be? I have all mine, but am curious if removing them (or if they remove themselves) would be a problem.
I also would replace all the big seals and HGs. The most important are the rear main and cam seals ads these are a pain once the engine's in. Its always good insurance to replace the water pump and check/replace the oil pump.

My turbo's only got 83k mi, but there's no wear evident anywhere in the engine. It literally looks brand new inside and I've heard that about engines with over twice the mileage.

I can back that up. My engine has 198k mi and still shows the factory crosshatch on the sleeves. If I wasn't doing a stupid power build, I probably wouldn't even change the bearings on the thing...

I'm not bothering to touch the bottom end for the that very reason - everyone I've read about pulling one of these from a JY has stated that the bottom end was fine and with the rest of the engine in such perfect shape I feel no need to bother.
