Neither, actually. Below the alternator is the crankshaft angle sensor and the one near the timing belt cover on the driver's side is the camshaft angle sensor.
The knock sensor is mounted to the rear driver's side of the block, under the intake manifold. It's a ring with a bolt going through its center.

I dont quite know how the electrical portion works but i assume when it's disconnected/not working it's the same as if your engine is knocking. The ecu will pull timing Do you have the old style or new style sensor. You can check by looking at the plastic connector right below the throttle body area, infront of the pitching stopper. If both sides ar ethe same color it's the old style and needs to be replaced. I think the new style is white and old is gray but I really dont know for sure.

it's supposed to be black

I was talking about the lil quick release connector. Follow the wiring from the sensor and you should see where I'm talking about

If your O2 sensor is bad, it will send the car into limp. If you just run without one it will CEL after 50-75mi, but will not limp. I went through that with my car. I am guessing there is another thread that I haven't read. I will look around and see if I can find it for more details...

how did you "reset" the ecu?
Sometimes if it won't clear with the battery method, you need to connect both connectors and follow the procedure I have on my site.
